Kós' First Steps as an Independent Architect

The Calvinist churches that had been transformed from medieval church buildings had already caught his attention: Bánffyhunyad/Huedin, Magyargyerömonostor/Mänästireni and Magyarvalko/Väleni. Their exterior was characterised by the four small turrets at each corner of the tower, while their interiors were adorned with a 17th -18th century ceiling made of painted wooden panels and painted furnishings. The sketches of the building were prepared in the winter of 1912, and the actual designing took place shortly afterwards. The church was built in the seven months between 1st July and 31st December 1913. The designs are interrelated to those of the Church in Zebegény, adapted for large scale, for a more urbanised context. The Parsonage and the Residence of the Director, adjoining the church on either side, were sketched in 1914, as well as the Primary School to be built behind the church. Because of the war, however, this project was never realised. Kós was involved in the exterior reconstruction of the building completed in the 1970s. The building was fully restored for its centenary celebrations in 2013.
