Fabó Beáta - Gall, Anthony: I came from the East to a City of Great Palaces. Károly Kós, the early years 1907-1914 (Budapest, 2013)

Kós' First Steps as an Independent Architect

HOUSES FOR THE MUSEUM STAFF 1912-1913 Kós was commissioned by the Székely National Museum in 1911 to design two residential houses for the museum guards. The two one-storey buildings located in the back garden of the Museum itself represent a low-key reiteration of the architectural concept of the main building. - a pyramidal roof on an essentially square floor plan is supplemented by a dominant gable facing the street. M Residence for Ferenc László László Haris Today, both buildings are being used by the Museum as exhibition space, offices and guest facilities. H Director, Vilmos Csutak and his family, after 1925 SZNM fotótár H In front of the Csutak residence SZNM fotótár Kós' letter to the Mayor, Ferenc Gödri, 24th July, 1911. SZNM 7he sin^fe storey proposal has an area of207.00 m2. The floor level of the rooms has been planned 1 metre above the outside ground level, the layout of the necessary cellar areas (their dimensions according to request) have a height of 2.50 m. The ceiling height of the rooms is 3 m (or perhaps 3.20 m).May I ask that the Mayor kindly show these plans and descriptions to a construction professional and ask for an approximate price estimate, because I’m not able to give such an estimate for the Sepsiszentgyörgy area. If a local professional, familiar with the specific circumstances, gives an estimate, it’s bound to be more accurate and realistic. Once we know this figure, we can then talk about alterations, requests and special needs, etc. I kindly ask you to return the enclosed plans (of the museum) to me, having indicated the position of the chimneys. 170
