THE EFFECT OF THE DECISIONS IN MISKOLC MADE BY MDP KV (CENTRAL COMMITTEE OF HUNGARIAN WORKERS’ PARTY) IN SUMMER 1956 WITH A SPECIAL REGARD TO INTELLECTUALS József Vida The peculiar feature of the political conditions in Miskolc in 1956 as compared with those of the country was among others that the ostensible unity of the local party leadership had remained till summer and early autumn 1956. After the 20th congress of the Communist Party of the USSR the inflexibility of the local leadership decreased, but the decisions made by MDP KV in March and June strengthened the „hard line” in Miskolc, too. A change in this came only following the decisions of MDP KV in July and August. The chance for a way out filled party-men and non-party-men with renewed strength. Polemics and a more active intellectual life began in the town. Following the party’ s decisions on the intellectuals, the local leadership had cleared up all the grievances, mistakes with representatives of the intellectuals and discussed plans for the future at meetings in August and September. The main slogan on conferences and debates was „confidence for confidence”. In 1956 the local party and state leadership strove to carry out the party’s policy, decisions inspite of the intellectuals’ distrust, on the one hand, and the opposition on the part of some functionaries, on the other. POLITICAL STRUGGLES IN THE COUNTY BORSOD-ABAUJ-ZEMPLÉN BETWEEN 18 NOVEMBER AND 11 DECEMBER 1956 László Kun In the first third of November the first organizations of MSZMP (Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party) were formed. The space of organizing was dependent of the local (plant, village etc.) power relations. After the first steps, resulting mainly in the formation of the organizing committees, the rate of organizing slowed down. Namely, on the one hand, the communists taking part in organizing work could not be given protection from the different actions of the right wing, and the county leadership, on the other hand, was not able to provide enough help for party organizations having been formed due to objective and subjective reasons. The organizing work of MSZMP was progressing amidst heavy fighting with works councils. The standpoint of workers’ council in connection with MSZMP being formed by current power relations can be divided into three phases: In the first phase lasting till the middle of November the right wing hindered party leadership through acts of terrorism. The second phase lasted till the end of November. The right wing tried to discredit the communists working in organizing and through this new party by describing them as Stalinists and Rákosists. In the third phase beginning in early December workers’ councils acknowledged the possibility Of forming territorial party organizations, but at the same time they opposed to the attempts to form party organizations at factories. As a result, party organizations were not able to perform their real political duties in November and in the first half of December. 322
