ABSTRACT OF THE ANNUAL ARCHIVE BORSOD COUNTY-VOL. II. The History of the Students’ Fire-Brigade in Sárospatak in the 18th and 19th Century Béla Takács From the 16th and 17th century we have no data whether the students of the College of Sárospatak, which had been established in 1531, took part in extinguishing fires in the town in an organized form. It is probable, however, that the youth performed such services, because in 1777 the fire-brigade organized out of students had been established in the college, i. e. the establishment of the institution had to have some antecedents. In 1801 squirt-guns had also been bought for the students’ fire-brigade in addition to the existing extinguishers. It had been proved by several archival data that apart from some shorter and longer interruptions the fire-brigade had always been working and fulfilling its humanitarian activity. In 1880 the activity of the students’ fire-brigade entered a new phase, when forming a circle in accordance with its service regulations, they continued to work with an up-to-date equipment. It was in the same year that the voluntary fire-brigade of the town was formed together with the fire-brigade at the state-owned teachers’ training college in Sárospatak, the members of the brigade also being students. Thus, as regards fire-fighting organization, Sárospatak had been above any one of the big towns in Hungary. Using club dues and their own money, as well as various endowments, these students could get new equipment and could modernize it, respectively. From 1880 to 1914 the fire-brigade at the College of Sárospatak took part in extinguishing fires in 66 cases in the town or its environs. The working of the students’ fire-brigade was stopped by World War I. Postal Conditions in the Country-Town Forró in the 19th Century Miklós Kamody Relying upon archival data the study deals with the establishment and the working of the post-office and stage in the village Forró, the one-time chief-town of the district, in the 19th century. The fact that the postal routes between Buda and Kassa had run through Miskolc from 18th September 1790 made it necessary to transfer the posting-house from Vilmány to Forró and run it there. After the survey of circumstances under which the posting-house had been established the study refers to the contact between the posting-house and the domain owned by the town Kassa in Forró. For seventeen years had the domain’s inn been rented by 267
