ABSTRACTS OF THE ANNUAL ARCHIVE BORSOD COUNTY - VOL. I. Theatrical art in Miskolc in the second half of the 18th century István Kilián The foundation of the Minorite school in Miskolc goes back to the twenties of the 18th century. Its doors were opened in 1729 in a so-called rising system. Similarly to the Minorite grammar-school in Kézdivásárhely the data here also point to the fact that theatrical art is of the same age as the school itself. In spite of this fact, however, we have the first evindence of theatrical art from 1753. From that time on dramas and processions meant to serve for liturgical purposes as well, and were performed regularly one after the other. The author also brings out the data in their original Latin context. The titles of dramas published here give us very little help with the determination of the Minorites’choice of subject. The titles we have lead us to believe that they preferred performing secular dramas, that is the school-stage served rather for didactic than propaganda purposes. Among the authors we find Tibor Divényi, Mihály Knáisz, Boldizsár Kovács, Keresztély Svajzer(!), Joachim Gallovics. The plays were mostly written in Hungarian. The data available do not help us to determine the genre of the 18th century drama. The place of performance was possibly the dinig hall or an occasional stage set up in the garden of the friary. Once there was a performance on the market-place of the town and the bootmakers’ shed. It often occurred in Miskolc that the performance was preceded by a full rehearsal of some sort. Many a time plays were performed on Porciunkula’s day, on the occasion of county-installation or on the arrival of illustrious guests. This essay also proves that theatrical art in Miskolc has been a continuous manifestation since the second half of the 18th century. In certain respects Minorite schoolboys in Miskolc had been the forerunners of professional strolling company having a stage of their ov/n. Weekdays in Miskolc in the summer of 1848 (A diary by Lajos Alexy) Károly Vörös The study with a short preface publishes selected passages from a detailed diary written by Lajos Alexy during his stay in Miskolc from 16 June to 15 August 1848 who was a lawyer candidate about 26 years old at that time, and was born in Rozsnyó (Roinava, Czechoslovakia) in a well-to-do family of merchants. 287
