BY MARIANN G. JAKÓ AND ISTVÁN HÖGYE The Hungarian-SIovakian Population Exchange and the Events Preceeding The second volume of the series of The Acta Archivistica is a contribution to make the age 1945-1948 - one of the most discussed periods of the Hungarian history in the 20 th century - public. This is a selection of documents referring to the expulsion and escape of the Hungarians living in the Upper Northern Hungary and also to the agreement concerning the population exchange. The selection has been made from the documents of Abaúj, Borsod, Zemplén Counties and of town Miskolc. In the first place these are documents not publisched so far. They can hopefully give a more tinted, more realistic portrayal of the events. The authors' aim has been to make appearance the county-domestic aspects, the general and special episodes of the events, bringing into the lime-light the ways of the reception of the fugitives, the solutions for their problems and to give answers to some questions, for instance: to what a degree the inhabitants of the counties were influenced by the appearance and home- making of the fugitives and expellees crowding from 1945 continuously in. In the light of these documents, the special situation of the borderlands, the problems regarding finding jobs, the steps about the fugitives taken by the state and the local administrative authorities, the propaganda campaign of the Czechoslovakian Resettlement Committee and its reception by the population, the safeguarding of fugitives' interests are going to take form. In the volume there is a brief introduction to help the orientation in the documents published, and also to bring up the local aspects of the subject. Publication of the documents has been set limits by the bad physical condition of the files, therefore the selection has been completed by the periodical collection of the Archives. 153
