Kálmán Kardhordó: The Monument of the Reformation in Geneva and the Competitive Design of the Sculptor János Horvai

In preparations for the 400th anniversary of the birth of Jean Calvin a Memorial Committee was formed in Geneva one of the main aims of which was to erect a monument of the Reformation in Geneva. An international competition was conducted for which 30,000 Franks were set aside. From Hungary it was the sculptor János Horvai alone who submitted a work for the competition under the password “Jesus”. Although his work did not fulfil the conditions of the committee, he was awarded the 3rd price for which he gained 2,000 Franks. The study gives a detailed analysis of the history of János Horvai’s work as well as the later course of it.

Kálmán Kardhordó: Das Denkmal der Reformation in Genf und die Abhandlung des Bildhauers János Horvai

Es wurde im Jahre 1904, als Vorbereitung zum vierhundertsten Jahrestag der Geburt von Johannes Calvin ein Gedenkkomitee in Genf aufgestellt, dessen Hauptziel es war ein Denkmal der Reformation in Genf zu errichten. Zum Plan der Statue wurde ein Preis in der Höhe von 30,000 Franken ausgeschrieben. Der Bildhauer János Horvai war der einzige Bewerber aus Ungarn, er hat seine Arbeit unter dem Kennwort „Jesus“ eingereicht. Obwohl sein Entwurf den vom Komitee ausgeschriebenen Voraussetzungen nicht entsprach, er wurde mit dem 3. Preis und 2000 Franken belohnt. Die Studie detailliert die Geschichte des Planes von János Horvai sowie das weitere Schicksal seiner Statue.
