Nagy Imre Gábor: Pécs szabad királyi város 1848 tavaszán

PÉCS ROYAL FREE TOWN IN THE SPRING OF 1848. I. G. Nagy During the spring of 1848 the inhabitants of Pécs were preoccupied with the state of the internal order, the organisation of the National Guard, the parliamentary representation, the lack of silver coins in circulation, the inadequate food supply, the anti-semitic disturbances, the realisation of free press, and the local and national elections. The reaction to the revolution of 15 March followed a choreography in Pécs, such as in other cities. A frenetic city assembly and a mass-meeting were held, the national flag was displayed, the 12 Points were accepted, a National Guard were organised and more inhabitants were granted with civic rights. Two tendencies were clear during this spring in Pécs. First, representatives of different social classes and layers had the same aims, such as national independence, the codification of the free royal town status of Pécs and civil rights. On the other hand, problems and contradictions between social layers became more manifest. Basically the strengthening and keeping up the rights of the guilds caused anti-semitic disturbances, the tensely local and national elections, the problem of pasture at the Szigeti suburb. These are reasons why some city citizens did not support the changes.
