Márfi The study first gives a short outline of the Reform Age development of the theatre life of the town. The Revolution stopped this development and the after the collapse there was a decline. During the spring of 1848 the actors and actresses took their part in canvassing and even in armed combats. In Pécs this period was the consolidation of the coexistence of German and Hungarian theatres. Their repertoire included plays for decent entertainment instead of displaying patriotic revolutionary spirit. Since in May all theatres were closed, the new season started from the end of 1849. The life of German and Hungarian actors of Pécs is not known, except for an actress, who served in the army as a lieutenant. The life of Mária Sommer (known as Lieutenant Lajos Nyári, who belonged to the troops of Klapka) became a legend. Here, based on archival documents, a more objective story is told in the second part of the paper.
