Hermann Róbert: Adatok a drávai védvonal történetéhez 1848. június-szeptember
NEW DATA ON THE HISTORY OF THE DRÁVA DEFENCE LINE R. Hermann In April 1848 Hungary had a new independent Government, and, for the first time since 1526, the most important decisions concerning Hungary were made in the capitol of the country. However the government was unable to make the changes under peaceful conditions and later, to keep up the results of the Revolution, it had to defend the country by force of arms. The Hapsburg court first supported the national minorities living in Hungary against the government and later encouraged Josip Jellacic, the governor of Croatia to lead troops against the country. This threat and the Serb riot in Southern Hungary made the government to build a defence line at the Bácska region and on the line of the Dráva River. The paper describes this defence line in the light of the results of latest research: what troops were under the command of the government commissioner and the military leaders, and it examines whether it was adequate to defend the Croatian attack. The conclusion of the study is that the National Guard was able for the outpost duty but was not to hold up the concentrated attack of the enemy of twofold numerical superiority.
