I Hie court hold any law to |be in contravention of the Federal Constitution it becomes ipso facto a nulity. That is true also as to all laws enacted by the Legislatures of the fortyeight states and approved by the respective Governors. If challenged all those measures must pass the acid test of constitutionality as here declared. What supreme power, what unparalleled authority is thus possessed by this Court of Courts! And yet, here I am, a modest member of the New York Bar, representing a modest client; both of us of immigrant stock, enjoying equal standing with the leaders of the profession speaking for tremendous corporations or most influential and famous individuals; all granted the same fair and patient hearing, the same respectful attention. No one asks for my race or creed or religion or that of my client. “Equal Justice Under the Law.” Blessed America! Blessed her free institutions! Congress may pass laws, the President _njay sanction them, but they are all subject to tire scrutiny of the U. S. I Supreme Court as to their constitutionality. A most folyó várospolitikai kortesliáboru is uj szellemet, uj hangot hozott. “Emiciómentes, tényekre alapított kampányt kívánok,” — mondotta LaGuardia a választási harc kezdetén. Az egész választás irodalma tehát ebben a szellemben jelenik meg a közönség előtt. Polgármesterünk úgy fogja fel a hivatalát, mintha egy nagy, sok milliós üzleti vállalkozásvolna a vezetője. A vállalkozás tulajdonosai: a new yorki polgárok. A sok száz mértfcJdnyi uccák, a földalatti vasutak, a vízmüvek, a kórházak, a játszószerek, az uszodák, sporttelepek, az | élelmiszercsarnokok, smind az ami ebben a városban a közjót szolgálja — közös tulajdona minden pqlgárnak. A polgármester, s munkatársai ennek a sok száz millió értékű közvagyonnak mindössze adminisztrátorai, s feladatuk az, hogy minél kisebb költséggel, a közönség minél nagyobb rétegei élvezzék a közüzemek előnyeit. At 11 o’clock we land at the new airport, ultra-modern and streamlined to meet the tremendous pressure of traffic. Through broad and beautiful boulevards the taxi takes us to the marble palace of the United States .Supreme Court on Maryland Avenue, just behind the Capitol. The exterior of the classical edifice is impressively indicative of the grandeur of the United States and the superlative importance of the highest tourt in the land. The motto carved above the fine solonnaded portico ‘ ‘Equal Justice Under The Law” graphically sums up the fundamentals upon which our Republic is based. The interior of the building is of majestic proportions and dignified artistry. In its symmetrical simplicity the Courtroom lends an aweinspiring solemnity the remembrance of which one tarries through life. This is a great day; indeed, a historic day. Not only does it mark the opening of the term of the Court which begins in October and ends In June, but the occasion signalizes the induction of Justice Harlan F. Stone as the Chief Justice of the United States—the highest judicial dignitary in the World. i The auditorium is packsd. In the forefront legal representatives of our government headed by the U. S. Attorney General and 3tiis staff, while the diplomatic -corps is led by ILord Halifax, the British Ambassador. The enclosure set aside for the members >af the bar, filled with most prominent attorneys from all over the land.
