Zsuzsa MARGITTAL The Museum of Applied Arts in 2017
ZSUZSA MARGITTAI THE MUSEUM OF APPLIED ARTS IN 2017 Introduction The year 2017 focussed on preparations for the Museum of Applied Arts’ move prior to the start of the reconstruction project. The historical reconstruction of the museum has been long awaited. With every passing year, the need to restore damaged elements as well as renovate the entire building (while preserving those parts of the building with historical value and creating a technical foundation that fulfils both modern museum principles and the requirements for an up-to-date museum infrastructure) has become increasingly urgent. At the same time, 2017 was an important anniversary for the museum: on 20 November 1897, the museum first opened its doors to visitors, and now 120 years later the museum is temporarily closing for a complete renovation. On 3 September 2017, the museum bid farewell—for the duration of the reconstruction—to its visitors with a 24-hour series of events and on 4 September closed its doors. While the museum is closed, an important focus of the museum’s work will continue to be the online publication of the collection.
