Zsombor Jékely: The Museum of Applied Arts in 2013-15
Hungarian Design Awards 2014 7 October - 2 November 2014 Once again, the Museum of Applied Arts hosted this annual exhibition held to coincide with Budapest Design Week. Organized by the Hungarian Design Council, the exhibition displayed the work of prizewinners in the product design, visual communication, concept, and student categories. The aim of the prize was to show what Hungarian design is capable of, raise its profile, and help to establish reputations, as well as improve the competitiveness of some of Hungary’s products by means of successful design. In 2014, a special section was dedicated to the 35-year history of the design prize, featuring objects selected from the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts. Lechner, a Creative Genius 20 November 2014 - 27 August 2015 Ödön Lechner (1845-1914), one of the greatest figures in Hungarian architecture, and certainly its most original, deserves a prominent place among the international talents from the turn of the century. This exhibition presented the whole scope of his work. Special attention was paid to five major works, nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Site status: the Kecskemét City Hall, the parish church of Budapest- Kőbánya, the Museum of Applied Arts, the Institute of Geology, and the Postal Savings Bank. Visitors had a chance to familiarise themselves with these through the architect’s original plans and drawings, as well as period and modern photographs. (Fig. 5) Working drawings of the orna5.
