COLLECTION OF TEXTILES AND COSTUMES Ferenc Batári's bequest of carpets Art historian Ferenc Batári (1934-2005), an associate of the Museum of Applied Arts, bequeathed to the museum his textile collection consisting of over one hundred, mainly knotted and woven (fig. 5.1) carpets for the purpose of studying in the first place. The bequest ranging from 16-17th century Ottoman-Tu rkish carpet fragments through Turkish, Persian and Caucasian pieces made in homes and workshops to Turkmen, Turkic and Iranian nomadic storing sacks and saddle bags (fig. 5.2) covers a wide spectrum of Oriental carpet culture.
