I/ll. Detail of the restored case 6. Re-assembly of the bow-case It was not my purpose to stick the restored layers to each other, so, in the course of reassembly, I sewed the velvet covering and its lining together using large, tacking stitches, afterwards doing the same with the two layers of leather making up the back. Before completion of the re-assembly, I stuck the edging strips to the upper edges of the front and back panels of the case in accordance with the original technique. I then sewed them on, complete with decorative metal wire. Differences in size between the artefacts front and back panels necessitated the making of a lining inset, which I fashioned from polyester foam. I then sewed onto it a cover made from wine-red moleskin. The cushion equalised the size differences, and thus the front panel and the back panel could be fitted together (fig. 1/9). I placed the lining inset in the case and, at a distance of about half a centimetre from the edge of the artefact, I tacked the front and the back panels to one another, using the old needle-holes and strong thread suitable for sewing leather. I folded the made-to-measure edging leather with its right side uppermost and then stuck the strips on the edges of the case. I completed the attachment of the leather edges by making decorative metal-wire embroidery in accordance with the original technique (figs. 1/10-11). 90
