3. Handkerchief for betrothal adorned with pompons andfrills, Museum of Applied Arts, inv. no. 7700 fringes, buttons, trimmings, were favourite ornaments of noblemen's and women's costumes. Several variants can be observed on 16 dl —17 t!l century vests, jackets, coats, thus the appearance of handkerchiefs with pompons also fitted well the customary Hungarian wear. The third type can be seen in the portrait of Judit Révay, the wife of Pál Nádasdy (1633)' 3 (ill. 4): an ample white unadorned handkerchief gathered into a sphere with a pompon at the end. There is no unambiguous data as to its origin, but it was presumably a long narrow piece of looseweave cloth or lace gathered on one side to create a spherical form.
