layout, patterning and colour composition represents an independent style. The exhibition Once They Embroidered Using Silk and Gold..., which presented the finest Baroque and Renaissance pieces from the rich collection of úrihimzés held by the Museum of Applied Arts, opened on 20 November, to coincide with publication of the specialist catalogue Hungarian Renaissance and Baroque Embroideries prepared by Emőke László. Dr. Zsuzsa Lovag, the retired director-general of the Museum, opened the exhibition. A concert given by the Musica Historica ensemble recalled the atmosphere of the age. The so-called Bronze, Silver and Golden Sundays directly preceding Christmas inspired our exhibition of bronze, silver and gold (or gilded) sacral objects. A feature of this show was that special lighting was used to place the emphasis on a different metal each week. Accordingly, the bronze artefacts were given special illumination from Bronze Sunday to Silver Sunday, the silver artefacts from Silver Sunday to Golden Sunday and the gold (and gilded) artefacts from Golden Sunday until Christmas. In this way the different weeks of Advent were made memorable for visitors to the Museum. "The Collecting of Oriental Art in Hungary", the permanent exhibition of the Ferenc Hopp Museum of Asiatic Arts, could be viewed throughout the year in the Rath Museum building. Similarly open throughout the year - in the Hopp Museum building - was the temporary exhibition "Netsuke. Japanese Miniature Carvings", which was prolonged on account of its great success.
