sword, featuring common motifs embellished with gold- and silversmith's work of a high standard. Some fuchi bore a signature on their outer side. The eighteen fuchi now in Museum's possession are embellished with finely executed inlay of gold, silver and their alloys. The scenes depicted are mainly taken from literature. @ Very many of the signed pieces in the collection are indicative of the masters of the extensive Nara School founded in Edo in the late 16 th century and famous for, among other things, the iro-e (coloured picture) embellishment procedure. On two fuchis there is the mark of Jô-i (1701-61), and on one of these that of Nagaharu inmei also. Two fuchi bear the signatures of Nara Toshimitsu (first half of the 18 th century) and Masanaga (first half of the 18 ,h century), respectively. Both are representatives of the Nara School. There is one fuchi by Motoharu (late 18 th century), he belonged to the Sekijöken School, which in its style was close to the Nara School. This fuchi is modelled on the work of the master Toshinaga. Nagamine (first half of the 18 th century) @, he can be assigned to the Mino Goto School, features with a single work. Most of the unsigned pieces must have been made in the late 18 th century or early 19 th century. Purchased from Zoltán Korom Inv. no.: 2001.72.1-89. 1 Monika Bincsik
