a lance in the other; behind his back there is a tiger. Around the central figure in each painting stand four minor generals - holding swords, sabres or spears - on brown swirling clouds on a green base; above, beneath strips of blue is the upper air. The figures are painted using rich colours applied by means of detailed and meticulous brushwork. On the basis of the composition it is clear that these paintings belong together, and it may be assumed that they were originally part of a larger series. In lengthy (damaged) inscriptions on the reverse-sides of the pictures the exact names of the Daoist figures depicted may be read. This is a particular merit of these works. Inv.
