loose threads of the embroidery using the original technique. Complete reinforcement of the lining was warranted by the state of the fabric. Consequently, canvas-bound reinforcing silk, dyed to the desired hue using acidic dyes and cut into pieces suited to the pattern design, was attached using stitching, and the holes were darned. After the reassembly and the re-lining of the skirt panels, the pleats were arranged also using weights. The re-assembly of the two skirt panels, and the replacement of the missing girdle-band, took place after a study of similar skirts in the Chinese textile collection, with the girdleband being sewn from black canvas, without the sewing on of fixing buttons. The lady's skirt shown here is a characteristic example of Chinese women's attire during the late Qing era; its restoration has enriched our collection by providing it with an attractive artefact which can now be exhibited in the condition it warrants.
