ornamental composition for dress probably attained its complete form in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This conclusion is supported by the data of the objects published in the works enumerated below, and by earlier illustrations in books. Here I should like to pick out a portrait of a young beauty by Sin Yun-bok (b. 1758). On this picture, dated the second half of the eighteenth century, on the breast of the jacket of the young lady a one-strand norigae decorated with three crystal ball pendant ornaments is visible. 15 Research into the history of traditional Korean costume is based mainly on material from the last century, as only a few items have survived from earlier periods which excavated from the ancient tombs. On the other hand, completed pieces of decorated clothing were not regarded as artistic products, just as items for use and most of them perished. The value and importance of the remaining objects can be estimated on the basis of Korean research of the recent past. Here I should like to draw attention to the works on the history of costume published in the recent past by Korean author Geum Kay-sook and Paek Yong-ja, and to the summary of the surviving Korean pieces by Chon Kyong-hwa.
