(Renner Zsuzsanna) THE FERENC HOPP MUSEUM OF EASTERN ASIATIC ARTS 1. Five immortals (hanging scroll) Colours on silk, mounted on paper. China, 18th century (remounted in die middle of 20tii century). Unsigned, no seals. Size of the picture: 61,5 x 33 cm, full size: 95 x 43.7 cm. Five Taoist figures can be seen on die picture. The central figure is the Turtle King surrounded by four other Immortals. Their faces, the style of the clothes decorated with Taoist symbols follow a thousand years old Chinese tradition; the figures are represented in a variety of ways, die faces are individualized. The use of die colours is harmonious. The picture is executed with using very fine, minute brushstrokes, a typical product of fine-line technique (gong-bi). The unknown artist worked die figures out in great details; however, he followed a conccptional scheme. The composition, the position of die figures and die mounting on die left side lets one suppose dial die picture belonged to a larger composition. Purchased from Mrs László Keresztes. Inv.No.: 91.23.1. 2. Yang De-shan: Landscape (hanging scroll) Ink and light colours on paper. Mounted. China. 1986. Two seals of die artist: "Yang De-shan"; 'Yang De-shaiFs seal". Inscription (by die artist): ding-mao nian xia ben De-shan: "painted by [Yang] Deshan in the summer of the ding-mao year [1986]". Size of die picture: 67 x 67 cm, full size: 163 x 67 cm. The painting depicts a scene of Guizhou province. The composition reflects the traditional Chinese view of landscape painting: die long, tapering valley is surrounded by tall sugar-loaf-shaped mountains. On the lake a lonely figure is silting in a boat. In die distance die valley almost disappears in die mist.
