the bequest of Károly Csányi, organizer of our very first, and to this day the largest, Turkish carpet exhibition in the West. 3 The first-mentioned carpet has already featured in several exhibitons in Hungary and abroad: the exhibition "The Eastern Carpet in the Western World" held in London's Hayward Gallery could be mentioned as one example. 4 The structure of all three carpets shows the specific traits of Anatolian Turkish work. I. Memling Carpet, fragment, Anatolia, fifteenth century 5 (Plate 1) Inventory no : 14.427 Dimensions : 93 x 107.5 + 93.5 x 62 cm Structure : knotted ; warp : wool, eggshell white, 2 ZS ( = the yarn is made up of a thread that was spun from two strands twisted to the left (= Z) and spun rightward (= S); the warp on the left side is slightly higher; weft: wool, 1Z, brownishred, 2 shots after each row of knots; no border ; no ends : remnants of an appr. 5 cm wide brownish-red waved strip ; pile : wool, 2Z, brownish-red, white, 2 blue, yellow, blackish-brown (6); knots: gördes (symmetrical), horizontally: appr. 27/10 cm, vertically: appr. 25/10 cm, appr. 675/dm 2 . Pattern : in the field : on red background in 4 + 2 rows of red squares with sides broken up to steps and hooks, framed by a blue strip, with a star in the centres, set in a white octagon. There are stylized motifs originating in kufi writing in the little triangular fields between the octagons, which are shifted half a section in comparison to the next line. Border: in the main strip: foliage made up of red sshapes on a white background, in the two guard bands the pattern is also made up of smaller s-shapes. Condition : the knotted surface is relatively unimpaired, evenly faded, the edges are fraying; in the field horizontally appr. 2-3, to the left vertically appr. 1-1.5 gól rows and the border of the whole width are missing, around the 1950s or 1960s two fragments were worked onto canvas. Acquisition : purchased from Emil Sigerus, Nagyszeben, 1917. 1,000 Koronás. 6 II. Memling Carpet, fragment, Anatolia, eighteenth century* (Plate 2) Inventory number: 63.610.1 Dimensions : 43 x 73 cm Structure : knotted ; warp : wool, beige, on the same level 2 ZS ; weft : wool, 1Z, red, in three rows; no borders; no ends; knotting: wool, 2Z, red, brownish-orange, 2 blues, violet, dark brown, egg-shell (7); knots : gördes, horizontally appr. 24/10 cm, vertically appr. 24/10 cm, appr. 720 dm 2 . Pattern : detail of the field : an octagon with a motif resembling a stylized, twoheaded eagle in octagons formed by cutting of the corners of a raster, on brownishorange background blue-red-blue and red-violet-red squares with sides broken up to steps and hooks. The triangles formed in the intersections of the raster are decorated with ornaments originating in kufi writing. Condition : faded, moth-eaten, the edges are fraying, worked onto a canvas base. Acquisition : purchased from Ilona Csányi, Budapest, 1963. III. Memling Carpet, Anatolia, early nineteenth century 7 Inventory no. : 73.18.1 Dimensions : 123 x 177 cm Structure: knotted; warp: wool, beige, brown + white, grey + white, 2ZS, on the same level; weft: wool, brown, 1Z, in 3-5 rows ; edging : three cords on 3x2 warps with differently coloured sections ; ends : on the bottom fragments of brown and red kilimstrip, between the two strips brown and yellow woven (?) motifs on the top fragments of brown and yellow kilimstrip with the same ornamentation; knotting:
