FERENCZY, László: Traditions and new trends in the Japanese art of the Meiji era

Tsukamoto Kaisuke. One of his vases of the type raised great sensation at the Vienna Fair. 25 Later several workshops in Nagoya took part in spreading the new technique. Baseless cloisonné enamel going back to the early 20th century was represented by three small pieces. In this rather timeconsuming and therefore exj)ensive pieces cloisons and enamel paints were applied on the usual copper base. After enamelling, firing and polishing, the inner copper base was etched away with acid to give the ready piece a glass-like translucent effect. One of our small vases is decorated with chrysanthemums of various kinds and colours against a green-shaded background with Hattori's signature carved into the silver base (Figure 11). A counterpart of it is to be found in H. Garner's book mentioned above. 26 This technique (shötai shippő or plique á jour, as mentioned in the West) is still used in Japan. 9. LACQUERED LETTER BOX. M AKTE WORK ON RO-IRO-NURI BASE. ABOUT 1880.
