I •9: i II j ,A m 13. ARMCHAIR DESIGN, 1904 The armchair (Fig. 13) the original design of which from 1904 is in the docu­mentation centre of our museum-', is made of bluish grey stained oak. It is only the firm joints, the two parallel laths on the back, and the cross bands above the back, that show ornamental elements. Signed in the lower right corner: HORTI. The design of this chair shows certain analogies with the armchair made two years earlier for the Torino exhibition. This piece is the property of the museum too. The parallel between the two pieces is especially inter­esting, though the difference between them is only two years, on the back of the former one, the divergency of the upper part of the parallel laths and the flat carving of their fields show a pure Art Nouveau trend, whereas the 1904 design lacks in such clear­cut characteristics of Art Nouveau (Fig. 14). In the year 1905 the master's furniture designs were made already in America. Among them a large, timbered, upholstered library chair, known as "Morris-chair", and a small serving table from a dining room. This one was made for ,,the OSCAR ONKEN Co. Cincinnatti" (St. Louis 1905), while the design of the former piece was 186
