7. FRONTISPIECE DESIGN, 1900 The most interesting part of the front page is the left side field, with an oblong orna­ment of tulips and leaves on it. This com­position is connected to the decorative art of the turn of the century, both with its Hungarian ornaments and with Linear Art Nouveau. Compared to this above one, on another front page design (Űj Idők) VII. Vol. 1901. N° 14 (Fig. 8), the title lines in the middle of an oblong field are enclosed by a frame of patterns. The curved bends attached to one another show a clear ex­ample of Art Nouveau decoration with 8. FRONTISPIECE DESIGN, 1901 reference to the Belgian-Dutch Art Nou­veau. Both drawings are signed —, the former one in the upper right, the latter one in the lower right corner: HORTI. Our stained glass window design is from the year 1900 as well 17 (Fig. 9). The pencil-aquarelle sketch shows the master's more free and easy skill of composition and tinted colour handling. The floral orna­ments, the fine wavy lines that separate the glasses, the light violet, green and amber yellow tones reflect the typical colour combinations favoured at the turn 181
