Paleoanthropology of the Population Deriving from the Avar Period at Fészerlak-puszta (Transdanubia) Sándor WENGER Anthropological Department Hungarian Natural History Museum, Budapest ABSTRACT: The results of an anthropological study of skeletal finds recently excavated in Southern Transdanubia (Hungary) and those of comparisons with the series excavated in this territory and published previously are given. HISTORICAL. MATERIAL AND METHOD Archeological and anthropological finds were brought to the surface during agricultural activities on the Toponár State Farm at Fészerlak-puszta, 6 km NE of Kaposvár and 2 km NW of the "Toponár 40 számú őrház", the locality of an Avar Period cemetery published previously (WENGER 1974). Excavations to save the material were directed by E. SIMONOVA, archeologist, Archeological Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in 1970 and 1971. The results of the archeological investigation of the cemetery have not been published so far. According to oral information, the cemetery originates from the eighth century. In the course of excavations, the skeletal remains of 65 individuals were saved at the site deriving from the Avar period published previously; the crania and skeletal bones of 53 individuals, and only the skuUs of 7, and merely the skeletal remains of 5 individuals. Details of the material are given in Table I. The per cent distribution as to sex and age is contained in Table II. The anthropological remains are deposited in the Anthropological Department of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. The state of preservation of the finds is considered good.
