Dr. T. Tóth szerk.: Studia historico-anthropologica (Anthropologia Hungarica 12. Budapest, 1973)

We may state that the Pécs population was composed of dolichomorphic racial elements, among which the Mediterranean component was primary. In the case of men one may observe the presence of different Mediterranean sub-group, proved also by the extreme values of the stature data (158.0 to 175.5 cm). In the case of women, however, the gracile Mediterranean component is dominant. Beside the Mediterranean basic characteristic one may notice also the presence of Nordoid, Cromagnoid and mixed brachycranial element in scattered cases. DISTANCE INVESTIGATIONS As a last item of the anthropological analysis of the Pécs population, I have investigated the eventual parallels of the series. In the first place I have drawn into the comparison all the series of the Roman period, available to me in literature and consisting of at least 5 individuals per sex in average. The scattered comparative material and the small number of cases have led me to territorial combinations here and then. I would like to emphasize ,however , that the values of series consisting of less that 10 cases and of those made by territorial combinations (if their cases are not numerous) have an informative character only, not suitable for scientifically valid conclusions. The investigated Roman series are the following (third to sixth centuries A. D.): Brigetio (NEMESKÉRI 1956a), Csákvár (NEMESKÉRI 1956b), Intercisa (NEMESKÉRI 195 4), Maj s (ÉRY 1968), Vörösmart (WENGER 1968), combined material from Baranya county (TÓTH 1962, ÉRY 1968, WENGER 1968), Austrian combined material (EHGARTNER 1947, KLOIBER 1936, 1939, LEBZELTER 1927, 1935, LEBZELTER-THALMANN 1935, PACHER 1949), combined material from the territory of Schwitzerland and South Germany (HUG 1940),Rome
