cranial breadth, and the bizygomatic breadth ,be s ide the topographic nearness with the Avar Period material from Ártánd and Jánoshida-Boldogháza the agreement with the series from Kódmező~ vásárhely-Pehértópart, the Azov area, the South Ural and the Saratov groups from the Sarmatian Period is also considerable. In analysing the upper facial height and the bizygomatic breadth, the agreement with the material from Szentes-Kistőke (Jazigian-Sarmatian Period) is very striking; following the remains from Jánoshida-Boldogháza, the topographical nearness appears also with the series from Saratov, the South Ural, the Azov area, and the Lower Volga. In the case also of the upper facial height and the orbital index, the relative morphological nearness with the series, of those from the Sarmatian Period, from Szentes-Kistőke and the Azov area can again be observed. Concerning the nasal index and the orbital index, besides the Avar Period material from Alattyán-Tulát, Áporkaiürbőpuszta, Szeged-Kundomb, and Tiszavárkony, a comparative nearness to the series from Hódmezővásárhely-Fehértópart and Szentes-Kistőke (Jazigian-Sarmatian Period) can be pointed out. (Figs. 5-S. ) In short, therefore, the comparative analysis of the anthropological material from the Early Avar Period at Tiszavárkony clearly reflect that besides its similarity with some Avar Period finds from Hungary it shows a very considerable morphological agreement with our home material from the Jazigian-Sarmatian Period as well as with those from the Sarmatian Period in the Soviet Union. This appears especielly in the case of the material from Szentes-Kistőke. It is worthy of special mention that in some cases the series discussed here stands nearer to those from the Sarmatian Period than a number of finds from the Avar Period (Pig. 1-2, 5-6;. The above inferences corroborate the archeological statements that the tribal alliance from the Early Avar Period settled in the North of the Great Plains on the Sarmatian indigeneous population. It is know that Tóth (in: Tóth-Firshtein, 1970), in a comprehensive work on the speciel anthropological problems of the population of the Avar Khaganate, refers in several cases
