ANTHROPOLOGIA HUNGARICA I TOME VII. M*- N< Section Anthropologique du Musée d'Histoire Naturelle I THE OSTEOLOGICAL DATA OP THE 9 th CENTURY POPULATION OP ÁRTÁND by Kinga K. Éry Between 1955 and 1957 A. KRALOVÁNSZKY and K.K. ÉRY excavated the 262 graves of a late Avar period cemetery looated at KapitánydÜlŐ in the eastern Hungarian village of A"rtánd /Hajdu-Bihar County/. The 262 burials contained 255 human, 1 animal /dog/ and 6 symbolic /vessel burials without human remains/ graves. Three sporadic cranial finds from this site are also included among the osteologlcal material. The osteologlcal material is deposited at the Dept. of Anthropology of the Museum of Natural History, while the archaeological finds are in the Déri Museum, Debrecen. The present publication treats the osteologlcal. data of the series. The evaluation of the results will be presented in a separate study /K.K.ÉRY, 1967/. The methods of data oolleoting used for each table will be briefly mentioned in the following. Table 1 . This table oontains the series, inventory and grave number of all the excavated individuals. The representation data of the quantitative and qualitative values of the osteologlcal material were calculated according to the ÉRY - KRALOVÁNSZKY - NE.MESKÉRI /1963/ method. Sex-determination from 15 years of age was done on the basis of 22 criteria /which are given in Table 5/. Sex-determination, sex-expression values and the representation values of sex-determination are based on the ÉRY - KRALOVÁNSZKY - NEMESKÉRI /1963/ method. /As It can be seen from Table 5 a slight modifioation was made when grouping the ischio-pubis index and the ootylo-sciatic index./ The ages of the Infans /0-14 years/ group according to the eruption of teeth were determined by SCHRANZ's scheme /1959/ and this was controlled by SCHOUR and MASSLER» s scheme /1941/. Together with the degree of ossification JOHNSTON' s method /1961/ was used to determine the ages of the Juvenis group /15-22 years/. According to the NEMESKÉRI - HARSÁNYI - ACSÁDI method /VY<^/ the ages of adults /23-x years/ were determined on the basis of the endocranial obliteration /0/ of the cranial sutures, the changes of internal structure of the proximal epiphyses of the humerus /H/ and femur /P/ and the superficial changes in the facies symphyseos /S/. ACSÁDI and NEMESKÉRI * s latest modification /1965/ was used fór approximating the age limits. Table 2 . The osteologlcal material was measured and the indioes calculated according to MARTIN's /1928/ manual. The following measurements and indioes were taken in the examination:
