1985. november Amerikai Magyar Értesítő 11.oldal The Nobel Peace Fraud The Nobel Peace Prize hit a new low with the award to the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. The Soviet co-president of the honored group is Dr. Yevgeny Chazov, the cardiologist who treated Leonid Brezhnev. Still more telling, another prominent Soviet affiliate is Prof. Marat Vartanyan of the Institute of Psychiatry, the leading apologist for the Soviet practice of throwing dissidents in mental hospitals. The Soviets withdrew from the World Psychiatric Association in 1983 under threat of expulsion over this practice. Less squeamish, the Nobel committee was impressed by the group’s role in “spreading authoritative information” on “the catastrophic consequences of atomic warfare,” thus increasing public opposition to nuclear weapons. But this information is spread almost exclusively in the West. Activity inside the U.S.S.R. has been the barest possible window dressing. In 1982, just before the Geneva talks on strategic weapons, the International Physicians did have one joint panel discussion on Soviet television, unadvertised and shown in daytime when viewing is low. The Soviet wing of the group also published a book on the medical consequences of a nuclear attack. But only 7,000 copies were printed, compared with a normal Soviet printing of 200,000, and most of these were exported. Dissident peace activists in Moscow could finally obtain a copy only when a Western visitor brought them one. The pampered Soviet establishment represented in the International Physicians contrasts with the Soviet Union's real peace activists, such as the inofficial Moscow Group to Establish Trust between the U.S.S.R. and the U.S.A. (See “The Real Peace Movement,” Review & Outlook, Jan. 10, 1984; "Their True Face,” Review & Outlook, Dec. 21, 1984.) Just two months ago a Moscow court gave a three-year sentence to a leader of the dissident peace group. Dr. Vladimir Brodsky, a former professional colleague of Dr. Chazov. Dr. Brodsky originally was charged with “malicious hooliganism” for, among other things, putting up an exhibit in his apartment of photos about the American peace movement sent to him by Daniel Ellsberg. Another Trust group member, Kiril Popov, was arrested on June 19 for spreading “anti-Soviet propaganda” and faces a 12-year term. During the summer, two 17-year-old girls were put in a mental hospital for trying to participate in a joint demonstration with visiting Dutch peace activists. Perhaps the most punished of the Trust group members, Alexander Sha- travka, completed a three-year sentence this August, and was promptly sentenced to another four years without even leaving the camp. The provincial court that originally put him away had said bluntly that his work interfered with Soviet manipulation of the Western peace movement. The American members of the Physicians group have turned a blind eye not only to the unofficial activists but to the most prominent of all the voices for peace, Andrei Sakharov. Efrem Yankelevich, the husband of Dr. Sakharov’s stepdaughter, reports that the family has tried since 1980 to reach the group's American co-president, Dr. Bernard Lown of Harvard, who has responded to none of their repeated letters and phone calls. In 1984, when Dr. Sakharov was on a hunger strike, his stepchildren went to a world conference of the Physicians- group in Helsinki trying to get an audience with Dr. Lown and Dr. Chazov. The two categorically refused to see them. Other delegates from the conference met with Dr. Sakharov’s family only after it became a scandal in the Finnish and Swedish press. When the Nobel committee gave the peace prize to Dr. Sakharov 10 years ago, the award gained some dignity from its recipient. It now demeans itself by honoring hypocrisy. A fiatalság és a középnemzedék is hallatja hangját, ifjúsági konferencia keretében. A rendezőség mindent elkövet, hogy a legmaradandóbbat, legszebbet nyújtsa a közönségnek. A szombat esti díszvacsora, a patinás Magyar Bál. a clevelandi cserkészek regös csapatának gyönyörű magyar népitánca mind ezt bizonyítja majd. Vegyünk részt minél többen ezen a gondos munkával és lelkesedéssel előkészített nagy eseménysorozaton. Hadak utján keleti fergeteg, szörnyeteg, Elnyeli a világot, a népeket, Maroknyi magyar, csak nem állitja meg? Még nagyszerű terveket szőtt egy nemzet, Az ország szive lendült, és egy pillanatra Megállt a világ-tengely fordulata, Süvitett, zengett a nemzet forradalma, Kigyulladt gyötört lelkek titkos gondolata, Éljen, szabad legyen a haza, Európa. Segitség kellett volna a sas-fiókáknak, De Szuez, és olaj, több hasznot hajt a világnak. Azért az Istenek, s világ előtt nyertünk szimpátiát Tizenéves, jövendők sasfiai szabadságát Győzték a harcban, de elvesztettük a csatát, Feketén vijjogó keselyüknek, vörös hiénáknak Odavesztettük a szegény hazát.
