10. oldal ÉRTESÍTŐ 1980. május hó THE TRANSYLVANIAN QUARTERLY AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL REPORTS ON RUMANIA Amnesty Internatonal, a world-wide organization, honored with the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize, has consultative status with the U.N., and the Council of Europe. In a 45 page report recently published on Rumania, Amnesty International discloses the deplorable situation of the Hungarian minority in that country. We quote: “At present there are no Hungarian language universities in Rumania. Three old Hungarian universities, Kolozsvár, Marosvásárhely and Nagyszeben have only some Hungarian language facilities left. Nevertheless, even here discrimination operates. In 1976 and 1977, 1,206 students enrolled at the Kolozsvár (Cluj, Napoca) University. Of these 269 were members of the Hungarian minority, but only 20 students were allowed to attend lectures in the Hungarian language.1’ “In the Csango-region there were 72 Hungarian language schools in 1958. Today there are none. Ethnologists predict that the Hungarian minority is threatened with cultural and linguistic extinction, as a result of the Rumanian government’s discriminatory olicies.” “A number of persons who have criticized official policies have been detained. Some have been maltreated. Some have died under mysterious circumstances.” Some of the cases listed by Amnesty International are those of Zoltán Zsufka, college professor, Jenő Szikszai, teacher, Lajos Kuthy, teacher, T. Sima, teacher, Károly Király, representative of the Hungarian minority, János Török, Béla Niszly and many others. ☆ ☆ DO NOT RENEW PREFERRED NATION STATUS TO RUMANIA UNTIL AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING DEMANDS ARE MET: 1. The recognition of the Hungarian language in Transylvania as second official language. 2. The re-establishment of the Hungarian Autonomous Regions under strictly Hungarian administration. 3. The re-establshment of all Hungarian educational institutions. 4. The return of all confiscated libraries, archives and museums. 5. The return of old Hungarian cemeteries under the care of the Hungarian churches. 6. The termination of job-discrimination. 7. The termination of all harassments and intimidations in relation to nationality. These demands are the base minimum the native population of Transylvania can expect in a civilized world! ☆ ☆ LOW INTEREST LOAN TO RUMANIA The National Inquirer reported on March 18: “While high interest rates are burning millions of Americans, U.S. bureaucrats are giving away millions each year in low interest loans to communist countries.” Among those countries receiving recently such low interest loans, the Euquirer lists Rumania with 2.5 million at 8 percent. The article quotes Congressman Richard Schulze, (R. Pa.), saying: “How can we give these Communists taxpayers’ money at 8 percent, while Americans can not afford to buy a home at 15 percent interest?” ☆ ☆ DO YOU KNOW that millions of YOUR TAX DOLLARS HELP SUPPORT THE MOST VICIOUS VIOLATORS OF HUMAN RIGHTS THE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT OF RUMANIA? IN TRANSYLVANIA Three million Hungarians, Germans, Jews and other minorities are treated as inferior citizens, imprisoned, tortured, beaten to death by the political police, due to their ethnic origin!
