4 FROM THE TRIBUTES TO THE CARDINAL MINDSZENTY:-PRESIDENT FORDi "József Cardinal Mindszenty stood for courage, integrity and unfailing faith. In his long life, he fought against tyranny wherever- he encountered it. There was an heroic quality about him that marked this man as a crusader for liberty, as well as a man of spiritual contemplation. His deep faith made him an inspiration not only to the Hungarian people he served and loved, but to all those who value virtue, truth and strength of will. Cardinal Mindszenty will be missed. He will nat forgotten."-Senator CHARLES McC MATHIASj “The world has lost a man of unusual spirit and courage. His lifetime was one of dedication and inspiration. He knew the value of faith, and he was called upon to pay the full price. It was no accident that Cardinal Mindszenty should have chosen costancy as a quality to be cultivated in the human character. Hi, himself, was nothing if not constant. His loyalty to principle and his dedication to faith and to individual liberty are the strong twin columns on which his fame will endure. József Cardinal Mindszenty was the constant Cardinal, Unshaken and unshakable, an example for his own time and a monument for the ages.”-Archbishop PHILIP M. HANNAN: "As a priest, a prelate and a patriot, this man became a legend in his own time...a symbol around which a great people rallied in the face of insurmountable odds. His death is a loss not only to our church and its people, but also to a nation which still struggles to free itself from a tyrannical government."-Senator HENRY JACKSON: "Cardinal Mindszenty was never one to roll with the punches of tyranny. Human life and human dignity have always been sacred to this man, and there was no risk too great for him to take, no battle too lonely for him to wage, to protect them."-Congressman EDWARD DERWINSKI: "He was a heroic stalwart champion of the people of Hungary who fought against the Communist takeover of hi3 country."-Senator BOB DOLE: "Occasionally a single individual-through the strength of his character and force of his indomitable will-aurpass the boundaries of his station in life and becomes a living symbol of an ideal. Abraham Lincoln was such a man-as waa Gandhi. There have from time to time been others, but todaz the alight, frail son of a Hungarian peasant stands out in the minds of millions of his fallow men and women as the embodiment of resistance to tyranny and commitment to freedom that can never be dimmed or shaken."-Senator HUBERT HUMPHREY: "József Cardinal Mindszenty's years of imprisonment and subsequent exile have been a personal testament to human freedom and political self-determination. Dedicated to a solitary life of prayer and meditation, he became a symbol of religious independence against political oppression."-Senator JAVÍTS: "Cardinal Mindszenty*s spirit and the ideals that his life experience represents have won him the undying admiration and respect of freedom-loving people everywhere.”-Senator BROOKE* “The life and character of Cardinal Mindszenty, to whom the world pays tribute, ara a living witness to the indomitable spirit of Hungary, a spirit which can inspire the hearts of men and women everywhere with the counsel of Scriptures “Be strong and of good courage, fear not, nor be afraid-for the Lord thy God, He it is that doth go with thee* He will not fail the«, nor forsake thee.''-Deuteronomy 31:6.-Senator CARL T. CURTIS: "His strength is a type of strength that, to some, appears archaic. But it is timeless. In resisting the lure of detente and coexistence, Mindszenty embraced the fir* of loyalty that, in other times and other places, has welded peoples together. Mindszenty was hailed as "a symbol of courage, of integrity, and of hope". These are virtues that appear in short supply in these troubled times. We as a nation, we aa a world, need the indomitable strength of a Mindszenty to achieve payee within ourselves and peace among ourselves."-Senator WILLIAM E. BROCK: "Cardinal Mindszenty is a beacon to us all. Ha could not and did not compromise principle during the harsh years in Hungary when it would have been so easy to buckle under the pressure brought to bear against him. He stood firm in the face of adversity. Even more, he maintained the strong principle of preserving human dignity. We can learn much from this gallant man. I wonder how many of us could endure the strain that he has endured. I wonder how many of us could maintain the principles that we know to be correct as he has done. Cardinal Mindszenty has given his entire life for God but we shall remember him for his gifts to rnan-a continuing example of the dignity of human freedom. It is onlz fitting that a nation, conceived as was the United States, honor this man who has stood firm for the principles of freedom and liberty and the destruction of oppression."-Father LADISLAUS IRÁNYI: "He took a sacred oath that he will be true to himself, that he will carry out faithfully the mission God gave him, that he will-with his characteristic fervor- challenge the men of his- age with the word of God. This commitment he kept unforfeitad. No human flattery, no love of" ease, no weariness of coniTict mäHe him break the pledge he gave to his Gad, hi3 Church, hi3 Nation. ”-Cardinal SERSDX on March 2 5, 19k>U “The truth will not be taken away from you by anyone, neither by force nor by flattery. You will never exchange good for evil, nor regard evil as good. You will never call light dark, nor darkness light."
