Amerikai Magyar Szó 130 E 16 SL New York, N.Y. 10003 Congratulations Vera Gyurko is an avid reader and long time subscriber of the Magyar Szó. At 103 years old, she is probably our oldest reader. CONGRATULATIONS! i She was born in Hungary February 2, 1897 and immigrated to America with her sister in [April of 1914. Vera (Szabó) I was 16 and her sister was 14 years old. Their brother, who was supposed to meet them, didn't show up until the next lay. Looking too young, the girls were denied entry into United States, and an official at Ellis Island threatened to send them back. Having spent a tearful night, they were relieved when their brother arrived and took them to Chicago. In 1915, Vera met and married Joseph Gyurko, a fellow- Hungarian from a nearby village where Vera had been born. The young couple (at 17 she was three years younger than her husband), settled in the southside of Chicago, where the other Hungarians lived. Vera and Joseph had two children. Betty, who married John Papp. and where Vera lived for 20 years, starting in 1966 when her husband passed away. Their son, (Joseph Jr.), now aged 81, continues to live in Chicago and visits his mother several times a week. Vera moved in with Dave and Darlene Shike in 1986 after the death of her daughter Betty. Dave and Darlene note that even at the age of 103, Vera still enjoys to doing chores in the kitchen, taking short drives to her son's house and, on some occassions, going to the cemetery. Vera loves to have visitors. The photo of Vera reflects her past and, hopefully, we'll be congratulating her for years to come.
