The train of events popularly known as the conquest forms one of the great turn­ing points in Hungarian history. The start of the settlement can be dated to 895 AD, when the main Magyar forces un­der Prince Árpád are reliably known to have crossed the Verecke (Veretski) Pass are the Eastern Carpathians, and descended into the Great Plain. Historical and archeological evidence shows that the Magyar tribes arriving from the East followed a semi-nomadic, semi-agricultural way of life. Their sys­tem of social and political institutions, modelled on those of the Khazars, can be seen as the antecedent of the Chris­tian Kingdom of Hungary. The natural endowments of the new country and the compulsion they were under to end their military raidings led the Hungarians to settle permanently in the Carpathian Basin. The economic, social and political processes that en­sued under the new conditions resulted in a renewal in Hungarian society and the emergence of a new system of power. The outstanding contributors to this pro­cess were Prince Géza (d. 997), who showed great political acumen in steer­ing a course between East and West, and Géza's son, the later St Stephen (975-1038), who became Hungary’s first king and the great founder of the state. Stephen requested a crown from the Pope in Rome, and in doing so irre­vocably opted for the Western-type European path of development, which has defined the Hungarian’s place on this continent up to the present day. The settlement brought an end to an era of more than 1000 years. As a re­sult, among the several peoples arriv­ing from the East, the Hungarians were the first to become a European nation in the Carpathian Basin, melting the various tribes into one people. There­fore in celebrating the settlement of 895- 896 AD we also recall the foundation of the Hungarian state, which took place in the year of 1000. The culture of the Carpathian Basin in the settlement period was one of an ethnically varied population. Therefore, when recalling events that took place 11 centuries ago, we also remember and address the peoples with whom the Hungarians turned the abode into a homeland. The official commemorations are based on scientific knowledge of the his­torical events gained from archeolo­gical finds and written sources, while also explored and revived in these cel­ebrations are the country’s popular im­age and awareness of the past as re­vealed in myths and legends, chroni­clers traditions, and Jater romantic ac­cretions to these. The HONFOGLALÁS (settlement) emblem above refers to the bow used as a weapon by our ancestors. The seven arrows pointing skyward, or seven rays of sunshine, stand for the seven Magyar tribes as well as for the rise of today’s Hungarians and their re­integration into Europe.
