Thursdax . Feb. 21. 1 985. AMERIKAI MAGYAR SZÓ 7. MERCUR1US VERIDICUS EX HUNGÁRIA. AN OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT REAGAN Dear Mr. President. Your Excellency. On the occasion of your reelection for President of the United States I am writing this letter from a small country. Hungary. I wish that in your post you be guided by deliberation and maximum wisdom in all questions affecting the fate of mankind. A world living in fear and especially the peoples of Europe so often devastated by war are looking hopefully to Washington and Moscow waiting for the resumption of negotiations at high level on the issues of peace and security in the spirit of trust and understanding. You, Mr. President, and Secretary Chernenko are carrying a tremendous burden of historic responsibility the weight of which is felt by all thinking people. Everything depends on you now. There could emerge a new Golden Age for mankind, the age of lasting peace but, on the other hand, there could erupt an irreversible catastrophe all depending on your success or failure. We, Hungarians have suffered indescribably in World War II. Like a tree sheared of its crowning glory, we have suffered all the consequences of the Trianon Treaty and were lying in the dust humiliated at the feet of the victorious powers. Yet Hungary like the legendary Phoenix bird was resurrected and is now building a new form of life. Mr. President, you have a family, I am sure you love children, mothers, helpless old people and therefore I am sure you are not indifferent to the cause of disarmament, mutual trust and peace. The ever growing senseless armament diverts billions from all peoples: investments whose tasks could be the elimination of starvation, illiteracy and poverty in all nations. If those amounts would be used to advance the cause of prosperity of all people then the heart of all men throughout the- world would be filled with optimism instead of fear and worry. The people of Hungary looked with great hope to the negotiation that began in January of this year and to the conversations that are expected to follow them. If the allies who saved mankind from the monster of fascism in World War II would be similarly allied today and reduce defense expenditures to the minimum level, they could establish world-wide prosperity that would become the foundation of a golden age in the XXI. century. Your Excellency, We are aware of the fact that the people of the United States do not want war, that they know our worries. We admire the wealth and greatness of America and are aware that this wealth was created by the physical and mental efforts of the working population. I wish, Mr. President that you perform your task in your high office in a manner that your name should be inscribed on the golden pages of history and that it should serve the benefit of the people of America, Europe and of all other nations. I believe, Mr, President that you will save the world from the justified fear and will shake hands with the leaders of the other great power in the spirit of understanding and mutual trust because there is simply no alternative. With best wishes to you and the American people I remain in trust and friendship respectfully yours István Sik,Instructor, Gbdöllö High School, Hungary The above letter, addressed to President Reagan, was received by us from a reader in Hungary, Istvdn Sik, High School teacher. In accordance with his wish we forwarded its English translation to the President. J.
