Elhunyt Koronyi János, a kanadai Független Be- tegsegélyző Szövetség (IMBF), központi titkára. 1927-ben jött Kanadába, két évvel később követ­te felesége, Frances. Házasságukból három gyermek született. Több, mint felszazadon at dolgozott a magyar haladó mozgalomban, a Kossuth Betegse- gélyző Egyesületben, ahol szinte állandóan külön­böző vezető szerepeket töltött be. Soha nem ment nyugdíjba és élete utolsó húsz esztendejében a Füg­getlen Betegsegelyző Szövetség munkáját irányítottá. Május 3-án nagy részvéttel kisérte utolsó utjara Torontó magyarsága. Ravatalánál a csalad es a szer­vezet nevében Tömössy László mondott gyászbe­szédet; melyből az alábbiakat idézzük: “Korónyi János szerette az embereket es öt is szerettek. Bé­kés ember volt, de ha kellett, kiállt az igazság mel­lett és azt védelmezte. Erényben és elvben kialakult nezetein elete folyamán soha nem változtatott. Bí­zott es hitt a jövőben, egy bekesebb és boldogabb életért dolgozott. Gondolkodásában, szivében és lel­kében élete végéig magyar maradt, amit buszkén vallott. A szülőföldet, annak népét Önzetlenül sze­rette. Fogadott hazájának is becsületes polgáraként élt, törvényeit tisztelte es kanadai embertársait sze­rette. Az ismert gyászinduló szavaival a magam és mindannyiunk neveben búcsúzom Koronyi János­tól: Szerettétek a népét és meghaltatok, — mert csak az hal meg, aki igazán szeret!” Nyugodjon békében! Egész életén át nehezen dolgozott, becsületes munkásember volt, hü olvasója és támogatója a Ma­gyar Szónak es a haladó társadalomnak. Gyászolja özvegye, Elizabeth, leánya Ann No- gjardt kedves csaladjával, Magyarországon egy nö- es egy férfi testvere, rokonai és barátai. Nyugodjon békében, emlékét megőrizzük. WINDERS, Publisher of the Dubuque (Iowa) Leader The document you see below was sent to President Ronald Reagan on February 12, 1982. The original Declaration from the Heartland is printed on an 11% by 23-inch parchment scroll resembling our nations Declaration of Independence. The Declaration is the work of the Iowa Progressive Coalition and was endorsed by 37 citizens’ groups all con­cerned about the present administration’s economic and social policies. In a covering letter for the document, James J. Wengert, president of the Iowa Federation of Labor, stated that the document reflects the “deep concerns, fears and beliefs of a broad cross section of Iowa’s citizenry.” We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men and women of all races, nationalities and creeds are created equal. That they are endowed with certain unalienable rights. That among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to petition it, alter it, or to abolish it. The short history of the present federal adminis­tration is a history of repeated injuries and abdication of government’s responsibility to serve the common good, advance the cause of justice, preserve the peace and to create conditions which allow human dignity to flourish. We the people, from Iowa’s labor, church, farm, civil rights, disabled, women’s, education, peace and community groups, on this, the 9th day of February, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-two, submit to President Ronald Reagan these grievances. Your administration is developing and supporting an economic policy that serves the interests of a privileged band of economic royalists, promoting the most brazen redistribution of wealth in this nation’s history from working people to a powerful corporate elite; thereby accelerating a widening gulf between the rich and the poor. Your administration is abdicating government’s re­sponsibility by declaring the poor, the elderly, the jobless and our children outside of the protections of government; thereby fomenting an ideology which declares the people are entitled to nothing. Your administration is expropriating national funds designed to provide basic human needs in housing, health care, food and education; thereby systemati­cally transferring them to an elite core of military contractors, increasing the risk of nuclear holocaust. Your administration is aiding and comforting the sworn enemies of human rights, by working in col­laboration with multinational corporations which exploit poor people and their rightful resources in developing lands. _____________ Your administration is joining with industrialists in a class war against the American working people, thereby denying millions of Americans the funda­mental human right to a socially useful job, a safe work environment and their basic trade union rights. Your administration is collaborating with the most regressive elements of agribusiness and corporate farming, by adopting detrimental economic policies to phase out all equitable price supports; thereby causing an epidemic of farm failures, and hastening the liquidation of the family farmer, while ignoring measures to conserve soil and protect consumers from potential shortages. Your administration is endeavoring to pass laws, issue executive decrees and use the prestige of your office to promote a national consensus contributing to the loss of civil, equal and democratic rights for minorities and women in all facets of their daily lives. Your administration is presiding over callous budget cuts which have induced a cycle Of fear and economic insecurity for our elderly and disabled citizens. Your administration is promoting a vicious cycle of unemployment, poverty and hopelessness for our youth. Your administration is allowing our lakes, streams and wilderness to be plundered, and our air to be polluted by installing as overseers of our environment, those indebted more to the oil barons and developers than to our quality of life. We the people assembled here today, believe it is our solemn constitutional right and responsibility to peaceably assemble and to petition this government for a redress of our grievances. We have great confidence that we will succeed in replacing the politics of despair dominant today, with the politics of hope. We the people believe that in our Solidarity, we will be the key to opening the doors to a future with Jobs, Peace, Justice and Dignity. AFRICA-T0UR During July and August 1982. the African American Heritage Studies Program will sponsoi four tours to the African continent. The opportunity to meet with leaders and discuss conditions affec­ting life of the African people will put in perspec­tive the past, present and future of African history. In West Africa, field trips will be an introduction to the diversity of art, literature and dance which has its roots in Afro-American culture. Lectures giving the history of famous instituti­ons and sites will he an assessment of the contribu­tion Africans have made to world history. This is a worthwhile experience which cannot be missed.
