Out of the many messages pouring in we publish this greeting from the World Federation of Trade Unions. Dear Brothers: The World Federation of Trade Unions, representing 190 million workers on five continents and dedicated to the unity and solidarity for peace and progress of all workers of all nations and creeds, adds its voice to the many honoring an outstanding American, Hugo Gellert, distinguished artist, fighter for human rights and for international friendship, defender of culture and human freedom, in celebration of his seventy years of work as an artist in labor’s cause. A humanist in the traditions of Daumier and Siqueiros, Gellert has taken his stand with labor in his life as well as in his paintings and litographs, it was Gellert who headed the artists’ Action Com - mittee when the mural “Man at the Crossroads” by great Mexican painter, Diego Rivera, was destroyed by order of Nelson Rockefeller. Now, 47 years later, Man is still fighting his way beyond that crossroads, having suffered a war produced by fascism which cost 60 million lives. Through these years Hugo Gellert has been and remains an artistic craftsman of superb quality and a staunch fighter for the life and hopes of humanity as the proper subject of art and a tower of strength, to' those of his fellow artists who also fought against the dehumanization of “non-objectivity” which was imposecf on US artists by every gallery, every critic and all media accessible to the control of monopoly capital. The WFTU is proud that Hugo Gellert accepted our invitation to participate in the competition held in celebration of the Ninth World Trade Union Congress, Prague, 1978 where his entry was awarded first prize. His litograph “Billions for Jobs, Not War”, appeared as the February page of the 1981 WFTU Calendar. We wish him every success and many more fruitful years. We believe that the great struggles being waged by the US working class give every reason to believe that a new wave of humanist art, reflecting the needs of the working people, will emerge and carry forward the work of Hugo Gellert, Gropper, Ref- regier and others. Editor.) • The Reagan administration has no popular mandate for the cuts. It cannot be repeated too often that 73 %of the eligible voters did not vote for Reagan. This includes those who did not vote at all, and those who voted for other candidates. The total dollar sum of these sweeping and devastating food cuts comes to $ 4.2 billion, less than one-fourth of the $ 20.7 billion increase alone for the 1982 military budget of $ 226 billion. What is hoped to be gained by this madness? A balanced budget? Almost all economists are agreed that the combination of more guns and more tax cuts for the rich have already made that impossible. Curbing inflation? That goal has been doomed by the Administration’s escalation of the many factors that make for runaway inflation. Thus, budget slashes in the food stamp program, accompanied by tampering with the school food service program, the Women, Infants and Children Supplemental Feeding program, Nutrition Education and Training programs, and other food programs are certain to have disastrous consequences to individuals, families, whole communities and the nation. Suck action may have repercussions for generations. Such cuts should be resisted by all persons of social and moral responsibility. The ultimate measure of the quality of life in our society is the way we care for our children, the sick and the elderly. In the interests of their health and well-being and of the security of our nation, we urge you not to reduce or take away their lifeline food assistance. Dr. A. I will contiune to support the Magyar Szó if you put out a bi lingual paper. Everything half and half, I think the paper would sell better to the young people who read only English.
