Family Page ■ Trees to Keep Budapest Clean Budapest is to plant a forest belt in a semicircle round its eastern and southern environs during the next few years to block dust clouds which come annually from the Great Plains. The belt, part of 2,400 acres of tree-planting to keep the air of the city pure, will run from Vác, some 20 miles north of the city centre, round to the southern limits of the city. Other parts of the scheme include more than 500 acres of plantations, parks and avenues within this semi-circle on the left bank of the Danube. The work will be l>egup before next spring. THE JUDASES OF TODAY No group has suffered as much because of the work of informing stool pigeons as the labor movement. In the old days, we joined our unions with a feeling of fear as well as courage. We did not want to lose our jobs, but we knew the boss would fire us if we made application to join a Union. ' Stool pigeons by the tens of thousands were in the employ of greedy employers. Many of these stool pigeons became officers of those who were taking the most prominent part in the union, and these would not only be fired, but blackballed as well. These stool pigeon officers-would foment strikes to break up the union. They were hated informers. There is something indecent about the informer, and even the employers who hired them had a secret dislike for the stool pigeon. Down deep they did not trust him any more than the workers trusted him. From the days of Judas Iscariot, who sold his Master for a few pieces of silver, the informer has not had a respectable status among upright people. It would, therefore, be too bad if our nation were to develop into a giant university of stool pigeons. In New York City, it is difficult for one to teach in the public schools unless he agrees to become an informer upon every other schoolteacher he may come in contact with. If some teacher, years ago, might have been a member of the conimunbt rariy, the leacner wno Knows this must report it. It makes no difference how clean a life fellow teacher might be living at the present, he is supposed to stool just the same. In all walks of life will be found crooks, moral perverts, degenerates, and those with criminal tendencies. Morally, there should be a responsibility to report such outcasts, but there is no threat of discharge if such is not done. No loyal American would hesitate to report any information he might have of the activity of a person who would sabotage our country. It is inconceivable that if one knew of a murder plot, he would not inform the police. If robbery is contemplated we would be compelled to say informing is a responsibility of every American who desires to preserve law and order. We believe that most Americans would do all of these things without being compelled under penalty of discharge for not doing them. We are sorry, but we simply cannot like the stool pigeon system. Sometimes, the glare is broken in a simultaneous dimming action, a mutual gesture of road courtesy symbolic of brothers passing in the night. But at other times, drivers wait for the showdown in the dazzling, baffling glare, neither willing to give in and be the first to dim. On seconds the situation switches from a game to a gamble to a tragedy, as unyielding stubbornness passes the point or correction. Each driver flinches from his bluff when he realizes that is has been called, that Death is about to pick up the stakes in his foolish game. But too late to draw back then. Too late for the driver himself, for those in the car with him> and for that stranger behind the other headlights. Vibrant, moving lives will suddenly become still and cease to move. For both drivers have been faded with life’s greatest road test: “...am I my brother’s keeper?” Both drivers, very probably, are pleased with The primary objective set out before the first Five-Year Plan has been to convert an inadequately industrialized country of a predominantly agricultural character to an industrial state with advanced agriculture. The rate of expansion in the national economy during the Five-Year Plan period is without precedent throughout the history of this country. The ‘incomparably rapid advance has accrued from, and relied on, the devoted and zealous efforts of workers, working peasantry and the working people as a whole. The productive forces of the country have made very speedy progress in the past five years. An annual average of 29 per cent of the total national income has been set aside for accumulation. The fixed assets have increased by nearly 30 per cent, with especial reference to those of socialist industry*. All spheres of the national economy have been involved in this development. The technical standards of production have been substantially raised and the large- scale manufacture of many a new line has been taken up. The increase of over 50 per cent,in the national income is adequate evidence of the rise in Lapunk 397 hátralékos olvasójához! At most, a simple motion of the foot is involved. Think of it as a way of saying, “Hello ..iand so long. I know nothing about yoy and your destination, and you know nothing of me and mine, but I wish you well.” Actually, it seems that almost nothing, happens when we pass and dim our lights, it is so routine, so simple. Yet, truly, it is neither routine nor simple. For a fleeting moment out there on the lonely countryside, we answered the challenge — we passed our road test: “Am 1 my brother’s keeper?” Yes! production. This has been made possible by a 155 per cent increase in the production of the •manufacturing industries. Heavy industrial production has risen in five years to nearly three times its earlier level and within this overall figure, engineering accounts for a rise of 267 per cent. Notable gains have been made in the output of the light and foodstuffs industries. There have been certain, if far from adequate advances in agricultural production. Gross farm output has gone up by 12 per cent, rural commodity production by 16 per cent. More intensive farming methods have been adopted. Producer cooperatives and state farms have been formed and progressively consolidated. Their total area covers something like one-third of the entire arable land of the country. Another achievement under the Plan has been the new network of farm machine stations. The growth of productive forces and the rise in production levels has provided the basis for a parallel advance in material welfare and cultural standard. Consumption has increased by 30 per cent in the past five years. The people have made noticable progress in the field of education and public health. Munkástársak!
