June 9, 1955 AMERIKAI MAGYAR SZÓ 15 HUNGARY’S “MAGYAR MARVELS” The world is again resounding from amazed acclamations hailing the near-miraculous feats of the sons of our native land, Hungary. In 1952 is was their glorious victories in the Olympic games at Helsinki. In 1953 and 1954 it was the irresistible sweep of their national football team climaxing in the historic 6:3 victory in London, and in the 7:1 in Budapest. This year the athletes of Hungary burst forth in another branch of sports in track events. Their runners are toppling world record after world record amidst circumstances that leave the sport world gasping. We are herewith trying to summarize their phenomenal accomplishments as they were recorded by the American press. Let’s take Tabori’s historic victory in the 1- mile race in London. Here is the way the N- Y. Times reported it under on 8 column headline: HUNGARIAN FIRST Tábori in 3:59 Mile, Chataway, Hewson Follow in 3:59.8 By JOSEPH FRAYMAN Special to the New York Times LONDON, May 28—The most magnificent mile race in history saw three men beat the four- minute mark today. A 24-year-old Hungarian soldier, László Tábori, won in 3 minutes 59 seconds. He finished six feet ahead of Chris Chataway and Brian Hewson, both of England. Chataway was second in 3 minutes 59.8 seconds, inches in front of Hewson, who was clocked in the same time. . The Hungarian set a British all-comers and European record. He lowered by four-tenths of a second the British record set by Roger Bannister when he scaled the “Everest” of the »sport by becoming the first man to break through the four-minute-mile barrier. Since Bannister pushed open-the gate at Oxford last May, four more men have slipped through. They are John Landy, Australian holder of the world record with 3 minutes 58 seconds, and the three of today. Track Softened by Bain Their achievement was all the more meritorious because the track at the White City Stadium was softened from a heavy rain last night. És mivel napjainkban ezen problémáknak főpontja a, háború lehetőségének vitatása, szinte természetes, hogy a többségi véleményt hangoztatva imigyen foglal állást a maga igaza mellett: “Háború mindig volt és mindig lesz, mert az ember természeténél fogva hajlamos a gyilkolásra.” És e könyelmü megállapítás dacára is a jő figyelő észreveheti, hogy eme kijelentések mély meggyőződésből erednek, mert tudat alatt, ösztönösen érzik, hogy a mindennapi kenyér biztosítására és a nagy általánosságban egy egészséges életmódhoz szükséges dolgokért nem érdemes egy másik ember életét kioltani, mert hiszen mindezt a tömeggyilkolás és az ezzel járó tengernyi szenvedések özöne nélkül is megszerezheti magának szorgalmas munkája révén, ha ez a munkaalkalom intelligens és jóakaratu gazdásági tervek révén biztosittatik számára. “Dehát... ez már igy volt és igy lesz, — nyugszik bele a vita során — mert az ember természete kívánja a háborút.” Ha azonban komoly és intelligens emberhez illően, tüzetesebb vizsgálat alá vesszük a háború szükségességével kapcsolatos közhiedelem “igazságait”, akkor könnyen meggyőződhetünk arról, hogy ennek a köztudatban lappangó meggyőződésnek semmi köze sincs az emberi alaptermészethez. The three now fought it out over the last thirty yards, but the Hungarian had timed his pace perfectly and held off the last challenge. ★ Two days later the sport world was stunned by another great race on by a Hungarian, Iharos. Here is the event as recorded by the Associated Press: Hungarians Dazzle Track World! LONDON, May 31.—Another youqg Hungarian left the track world gasping yesterday when Sándor Iharos slashed seven seconds off the world two-mile record to climax Britain’s two-day truck and field games which also saw a Hungarian lead two Britons under the four-minute mile. Iharos had been scheduled for jhat mile but scratched because of air sickness. Observers agreed that he appeared capable of easily running a 3.56 mile. When the games began Saturday, Hungary’s László Tábori, and Britain’s Chris Chataway and Brian Hewson each was clocked under four minutes in the same mile race. That performance brought 50,000 fans to White City Stadium Sunday. They cheered wildly as Iharos won the_two-mile event in eight minutes, 33.4 seconds while Britain’s Ken Wood finished second in 8:34.8. Both bettered the world mark of 8:40.4 set by Gaston Reiff of Belgium at Paris on Aug. 26, 1952. Tábori dropped out with a slitch with two laps to go but he and Iharos indicated during the two- day meet that Hungary, a small-nation “powerhouse” at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, is preparing to fill the same role in the 1956 ■Games at Melbourne. Iharos, a 25-year-old clerk, was expected to win Saturday’s mile but did not run after jolting through a rough plane ride from Hungary. Az emberi faj történelme sok olyan bizonyíté- kot szolgáltat, amely szerint az ember nem kívánja, sőt inkább ellene van a háborúskodásnak, mert ha ez nem igy volna, akkor nem kellene milliókat erőszakkal katonának sorozni és a legravaszabb módon vadságra és ölni tanítani. Egy hadsereg nemcsak rengeteg pénzbe kerül, hanem hónapokon át tartó gyakorlatozással lesz előkészítve, hogy törvényes tömeggyilkosokat neveljen. Példa rá: mintegy 2300 év előtt Sparta és Athén háborújában egy ember megölése nyers számítás szerint 50 dollárba, a római háborúk idején már 100 dollárba került. Azóta folyton emelkedett. Az amerikai polgárháborúban 5000 dollár, az első világháborúban 26,000 dollár, a második világháborúban pedig 65,000 dollárba került egy katona megölése. This is how Reuthers reported that event: BUDAPEST, May 29 (Reuthers)—Hungary’s Magyar Marvels turned on the power in the second half to beat a Scottish team, 3—1, in an international soccer game today. The Hungarians, slow and off form, trailed, 1—0, at half-time. But after the interval they scored three times in twenty-three minutes and clung to their margin the rest of the way. And for good measure we present the hilarious comments of the noted labor columnist Lester Rodney: “We learn there is a bitter, no quarter battle raging in the section of the State Department which supplies scripts to “Radio Free Europe” (a forlorn gang whose philosophy is inevitable war and meddling in other country’s affairs and which has the gall to ask Americans for contributions for these aims). “The subject is the spectacular running of young Sándor Iharos and László Tábori of Hungary in London this weekend in the British Track and Field Games. Tábori led a trio of milers under the 4 minute mark, and the next day Iharos smashed the world two mile record by seven seconds. “The clashing theories in the cold war script department are as follows: “1—The Hungarian runners are clearly the victims of brainwashing, which causes them to lose all sense of truth, time and distances. “2^-Hungary is one of the ‘slave’ countries (since it threw out the Nazi Horthy gang and its backers, the big landowners and feudal aristocracy, you see). Eszerint tehát az ember csakis kényszerből megy háborúba és e kénysz r hatása alatt öl. És egyetlen ép ésszel rendelke ő nem azért, mert természeténél fogva szereti vagy kívánja a vér szagát. Csupán idő, kérdése tehát, hogy ezen megállapítás nyomán egy magasabb műveltséggel, egy minden embert egyformán értékelő társadalmi rendben lerázza magáról a to- meggyilkolás kényszerét, amelyet egy félig civilizált korszak érdekkörülményei ráerőszakoltak.
