REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 15 NEWS ITEMS imimiiiimiimimmimiiiiiiiiimimiiiii THREE HUNDRED POUNDS PER DOLLAR Every dollar contributed through the One Great Hour of Sharing-Share Our Substance appeal of the United Church Board for World Ministries to help hungry people around the world, enables 312 pounds of food stuffs to be distributed overseas. This recent figure continues a long tradition of low-overhead service through this program. Most OGHS-SOS monies are received by churches in the all-church offering during Lent. Many congregations have discovered that while an educational emphasis is needed once during the year, budgeted giving can well continue throughout the year. The United Church of Christ has only two regular all-church offerings — OGHS-SOS which is recommended for the fourth Sunday of Lent, and the Neighbors in Need appeal which is recommended for the first Sunday of October. If your congregation has not yet discovered these very personal ways to lift up world and homeland needs to be met by our denomination, you may wish to write or call the Secretary for Special Appeals, Stewardship Council, 1505 Race Street, Philadelphia, Pa. 19102, for suggestions and material. Editor’s Clipsheet BAPTISTS, METHODIST AND CONGREGATION ALISTS SEEK UNITY Delegates of the Baptist, Methodist, and Congregational churches met recently in Sweden to discuss the problems created by a merger of their churches. Various ad hoc committees are examining ways of achieving this merger. Success for this project would lead to an incease in social work in the country; theological studies could be simplified; Protestant religious newspapers could merge; and ecumenical organizations could join forces. Editor’s Clipsheet BIBLES - EVEN FROM SLOT MACHINES In the last two years, distribution of Bibles in Africa has increased to over 800,000 copies annually. There are now in Africa 8.5 million Bibles. The Reformed Church of Romania was granted an import license for 10,000 Bibles. This is the first time since 1945 that permission has been granted to a Romanian Protestant church to import Bibles from the West. The Bibles are distributed by the United Bible Societies. A total of 5,000 Bibles are to be imported from Hungary into Slovakia. In Brussels, slot machines were recently installed by the Belgian Bible Society in front of its building in Aarlenstraat. Editor’s Clipsheet PRAISE THE LORD AND PASS THE ASPIRIN From Missouri comes a letter written to the Bayer aspirin people: “Dear Mr. Bayer. You manufacture aspirin that relieves suffering, colds and fever. Your aspirin makes it possible for a person to get out of bed and fight off headaches, muscle spasms and bad nerves. These tablets work wonders Monday through Friday and especially on Saturday. But many people get no relief on Sunday. They are unable to attend church. Is it possible for you to examine your tablet and put an ingredient in it that will work on Sunday? Yours truly, — a Church School Teacher.” (From the Penn Northeast Conference Newsletter) SEATTLE CHURCHES APPEAL FOR DISASTER AID Christian and Jewish religious leaders in Seattle and in Kings County, Washington, have appealed to national religious agencies for emergency aid to help feed the hungry. A church food-bank program called Neighbors in Need, in which UCC participates, was helping more than 7,500 people early this year. With the closing down of the supersonic transport (SST) program, the number of people depending on the food program has more than doubled. According to James H. Stewart, UCC Minister of Metropolitan Mission there, the Seattle situation was expected to get worse because reductions in public assistance grants went into effect in April. The food-banks use donated food and also buy food with cash given by churches and individuals. The Church Council of Greater Seattle and UCC Conference will answer queries. K.Y.P. COPS 18-minute b & w motion picture, rental $10.00 This film, which has some strong language in it, was made with the help of the New Haven Police Department. It tells how police as human beings, husbands, and fathers react to stress-situations every day, how they handle anxiety or fear, and how it feels to be called a “pig.” COPS provides an unparalleled opportunity for the responsible civilian community to really see and understand the man behind the brass buttons. This film is available through the Mass Media Center — United Church of Christ, 2116 North Charles Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21218 and 1720 Chouteau Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63103.
