THANKS Though our Synod Treasury $5,754.85 was sent for Flood Relief in Hungary, and $840.25 for the same purpose in Transylvania. (A few of our churches sent help directly so that our Flood Relief Project amounted to more than $10,000.00.) Bishop Papp of Transylvania and Bishop Bartha of Hungary expressed their heartfelt thanks for the aid: “Please convey the grateful thanks of our whole Church to every Hungarian brother, every pastor, every congregation whose brotherly love and sacrifice made it possible to send to us such a great amount of assistance” — they wrote. DR. KALMAN UJSZÁSZY and his wife and daughter are expected to visit the U.S.A. from June 9 to September 1 at the invitation of Dr. M. E. Osterhaven (Holland, Mich.) who is also in charge of arranging their itinerary. THE EIGHTH GENERAL SYNOD of the UCC will be held from June 25 to 29, 1971 in Grand Rapids, Mich. Mr. E. Bihary, Dr. J. Butosi and Mr. A. Kovács will represent our Synod. Dr. Butosi was asked to serve as one of the 20 group leaders. TENTH ANNIVERSARY of the Rev. Arpad L. Beretz as pastor of Faith UCC in Hammond, Ind. was celebrated on April 18, 1971. The Synod President expressed the good wishes of the Synod in a letter. CLOSING WORDS It was in September, 1967 that the first issue of ’’The Calvin Synod News” was mailed to the leaders of our congregations. Since then, this is the 24th time that I prepare this communication channel. Whether or not this method will be continued, is up to Bishop Beretz. By oath, he is NOT obligated to add this voluntary burden to his official task. But—by way of reflection—I can honestly say that The Calvin Synod News helped to create a togetherness in our fellowship: 628 persons read it bi-monthly and felt the heart beat of our Synod. Especially our laymen appreciated that in dissemination of Synod news there was no distinction made between ordained and unordained ministers: the Synod became our Synod . .. However, it is my conviction that the Reformátusok Lapja can and should carry this service in the future. Why duplicate things? Why expect the president-bishop’s wife to have a special addressing chore — free of charge? Why NOT expect every church leader who is interested in our fellowship to subscribe to the Reformátusok Lapja so that the Synod becomes the fellowship of every member of every congregation? . . .
