THE NIAGARA FALLS meeting of the North American Area Council of the Reformed Church Alliance was held on February 9-11. In addition to the “business as usual” a question was raised: what is the theological justification of the Area Council and of the Alliance as such? A special committee will report on the findings next year. Otherwise, Bishop D. Abraham was elected chairman of the Council, Dr. A. Harsanyi stayed on the Committee of Roman Catholic- Reformed Conversations, and Dr. J. Butosi (who was re-appointed as UCC delegate) became a member of the Committee of Cooperation and Witness, THE CONFERENCE COUNCIL met in New York City on February 22-23, 1971. Treasurer Rev. J. Marsalko reported an increase of $3,563.60 in receipts during the year of 1970, a total of $37,940.97. The expenditure was $39,546.98 of which more than 60% was used for benevolent purposes ($5,175.95 for Basic Support, $3,000.00 subsidies, $5,826.00 Synod appeals, $6.200.35 for Flood Relief, not including $2,720.00 which was sent by the First Church of Cleveland directly, $1,929.05 designated gifts, $3,365.41 miscellaneous purposes, etc.). Rev. F. Vitéz reported on the Ref. Lapja that we are still in the red but with more subscriptions we can easily overcome our difficulties! A total of 48 items were discussed at the meeting including the budget for 1971, Synod Meeting Agenda, youth work, Hungarian ecu- mene, matters pertaining to individuals and churches. SYNOD APPEALS recommended by the Conference Council to the Synod Meeting include for 1971 the following: (1) Heart-Lung Machine—one is now being shipped to Hungary; (2) South American Mission in Uruguay, Brazil and Argentina; (3) Churches in Hungary—flood relief, special projects, etc. (4) The Kenya Mission in Africa—the work of Rev. Csákány and Rev. Pásztor. (5) The European Mission—second church in Belgium, Protestant Center in Switzerland, refugee work in Italy, etc. Of course, the Basic Support giving is not minimized by these special projects. DR. ANDREW HARSANYI is lecturing on “The Churches in Eastern Europe After 1948” in the New Brunswick Theological Seminary.
