REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 15 One great hour of sharing & SOS. ‘jjBBlS United Church of Christ inclucSng our work through Church World Service ONE GREAT HOUR . . . AND MORE The One Great Hour of Sharing— Share Our Substance appeal of the United Church of Christ, recommended for March 21st this year, is your congregation’s chance to participate directly in overseas emergency aid and development. If OGHS-SOS is a name that “rings a bell” for you, it may be because these two offerings — combined in 1966 — have been around for some time. The One Great Hour of Sharing was the name given to the annual offering for Church World Service needs following World War II. It was 1947 when the first simultaneous One Great Hour of Sharing broadcast reached church members across the country explaining what was being done in programs of relief, rehabilitation and interchurch aid. The SOS appeal also has a noble history. Initiated as the Share Our Surplus program in 1954 to provide American surplus food to the world’s hungry, undernourished and disaster- stricken, the program paid for distribution, administration and transportation of government-supplied goods. In 1963 the name was changed to: Share Our Substance. Today, the OGHS-SOS appeal is far more than a single hour of sharing for overseas emergency relief and long-term development. It is timed — in the midst of Lent — to allow an entire season of self-sacrifice for the sake of others. Won’t you plan to give generously through your congregation’s OGHS-SOS Lenten appeal this year? Conf. News Service, U.C.C. ALFRED ARNOLD 1879—1971 Alfred Arnold, a retired businessman died at the age of 92 in Amorbach, Germany. He was buried in the family plot at Reistenhausen, West Germany. Mr. Arnold was the father of Dr. Lieselotte Carey, wife of Rev. Leslie Carey. MRS- STEPHEN TARCZALI nee: Maria Bartók ____________1890—1971____________ Mrs. Stephen Tarczali, mother of Mrs. Bela Bacsó, died on January 2, at the age of 81 in Tucson, Arizona where she resided for the past two years with her son, Stephen. She had lived in Toledo, Ohio for 61 years. The funeral service was held in the Hungarian Reformed Church of Toledo on January 6, with the Rev. Andrew Harto and Rev. Bela Bacsó presiding. She was buried in the Willow Cemetery, Toledo. The grand-daughters of the deceased; Elizabeth and Ida Bacsó, played “Taps” at the grave-side. On Sunday, January 10, a Memorial Service was held in the Hungarian Reformed Church of Elyria with Rev. Bacsó presiding and another granddaughter, Rosalie, Mrs. James Gainer, at the organ. THE CLEVELAND MEETING The Council on Mission Priorities and the Conference Executives spent two and a half days in Cleveland, Ohio on February 3, 4 and 5 in order to examine the urgent problems of our denomination. It was revealed that $553,267.25 less money was received in 1970 for the national instrumentalities, while $117,207.86 more money was received for conference purposes. Our Synod is recorded as a conference which spent 34.5% of its total income for national purposes and 65.5% for conference purposes. That means that we contributed $925.05 less for national basic suport ($5,074.95) in 1970 than we did in 1969. However, our treasurer reports that our total receipts again superceded the amount of 1969 ($36,- 997.97), and our expenditures was unusually high ($39,546.98) because more than 60% of this amount was used for benevolent purposes! Perhaps you would be interested in knowing that through the synod’s treasury we helped the flood victims of Hungary and Romania, the Uruguay Hungarian Ref. Church, several churches in Hungary and in other parts of Europe, etc. The Cleveland meeting acknowledged the serious efforts of our congregations and we would like to encourage our members to continue in “well-doing” while we have time ... Dr. J. Butosi DO YOU JUST BELONG? Are you an active member, the kind that would be missed, Or are you just contented that your name is on the list? Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the flock, Or do you stay at home to criticize and knock? Do you take an active part to help the work along, Or are you satisfied to only just belong? Do you ever go to visit a member who is sick, Or leave the work to just a few, and talk about the clique? Think this over, member, you know right from wrong; Are you an active member, or do you just belong? Rev. Francis Vitéz, Editor 493 Amboy Avenue Perth Amboy, N.
