14 REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA NEWS ITEMS NEW MIXED MARRIAGE RULING PREDICTED Word that the Vatican may soon issue a directive recognizing the validity of a mixed marriage performed by a Protestant minister drew a warm reception from Bishop Hanns Lilje of the Evangelical Church of Hannover, one of six presidents of the World Council of Churches. He said it would be a “turning point” in the mixed marriage controversy, one of the major obstacles to better Protestant-Catholic relations in Germany. Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger, Archbishop of Paderborn, Germany, had told a Protestant-Catholic meeting in Loc- cum that Vatican discussions have now been completed and the new directive is expected shortly. It would replace the present church law requiring Catholics to be married in the presence of a Catholic priest. ★ BOOK REVIEW László Hunyady: Faith and Teachings of Jesus, Standard Press, New Brunswick, N. J., 1970, Pp. 120. $2.50. This handbook for religious education was prepared and published by Mr. László Hunyady. A short introduction is presented relevant to religion, revelation, and the Bible, followed by a section dealing with Christian faith according to the Gospels, and a historical background for Christian religion. The second section of the book deals with Christian life and the Sacraments. A short history of the Christian Church and Reformation is offered, followed by a Glossary, a short summary for Confirmation and prayers. This booklet is most assuredly an asset in Christian Education. It summarizes the most important principles of the Christian religion and sets them forth in such a scholarly manner that the book may be used with success. The book may be ordered from: Rev. László Hunyady, 50 Washington Avenue, Colonia, New Jersey 07067. UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST GIVING WAS UP IN 1969 Members of the United Church of Christ increased their contributions in 1969 for the denomination’s home and overseas missionary work, racial justice programs and emergency relief. Official figures showed basic support of the national and regional agencies of the church up one-half of one percent over 1968, for a total of $17,434,827. In addition, programs for racial justice received $402,897, compared with $397,266 in 1968. Special offerings and gifts for relief of suffering in areas ranging from Biafra to Biloxi, Miss., raised $1,291,752, compared with $1,253,263 in 1968. The Rev. Dr. Robert V. Moss, New York City, president of the United Church of Christ, said he was very encouraged by “even these small increases in support of programs, many of them controversial, beyond the local community.” The United Church of Christ is regarded as one of the most progressive and socially active denominations. In spite of the total increase in giving, the national boards and agencies of the United Church received only $9,927,121, 1.64 per cent less than in 1968. The state and regional conferences, through which contributions from the local churches are funneled, retained for their own budgets $7,507,365, 3.62 per cent more than 1968. The national agencies of the UCC include: United Church Board for World Ministries, United Church Board for Homeland Ministries, Office of Communication, Council for Christian Ministry, Council for Lay Life and Social Action, Council for Church and Work, Stewardship Council, Pension Boards and Commission for Racial Justice. The United Church of Christ is a union of the Congregational Christian and the Evangelical and Reformed Churches. Joseph Marsalko was elected pastor of the Bayard Street United Presbyterian Church, New Brunswick, N.J. on May 24, 1970. His resignation from the pastorate of our Wallingford church as well as from the position of Synod Treasurer is reportedly effective as of September 1, 1970. We regret to bid farewell to one of our most effective, respected and beloved pastors, but he will not leave us entirely: he will keep his dual membership with our Synod.
