REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 15 The theme of the retreat is “A PLAN OF UNION” — the recent document of COCU commended to the churches for study and response. Every pastor received a copy of this document; participants should study it in advance! Of course, Bible study and discussion of pertinent problems will also be included in the program. Our Presbyterian brethren are urged to join our UCC forces for the occasion! May we ask the consistories to help defray the cost of this retreat. Synod will pay again 3 cents to the driver and perhaps 1-2 meals. But it is for their good that the pastors be present! * * *■ * * BETHLEN ALMANAC In our previous issue we asked you to send material to Rev. V. Orth. It was a mistake! The Synod Meeting accepted the recommendation of the Committee on Press and Radio that “the reports for the Bethlen Naptár be sent to the Committee Chairman before September 15, 1970” Send, therefore, the material to the Rev. Paul Kántor, 696 Tona wanda ,St. Buffalo, N. Y„ 14207 — IMMEDIATELY. The pictures (NOT glossy) should be sent directly to Superintendent Louis Nagy. Let us cooperate in this matter, too! MINUTES The Minutes of our last Synod Meeting were published before Labor Day and are being mailed to all our churches. Consistories should devote time to read, discuss and digest the contents. . . FLOOD RELIEF The official paper of the Reformed Church in Hungary (Ref. Lapja, Aug. 16 and Sept. 6 issue) gives detailed information on the church buildings damaged by the flood: $150,000 needed yet . . . In the Synod of Erdély $50,000 is needed urgently for personal and material help. In the Synod of Királyhágó 39 congregations suffered heavy losses. While we do not want to minimize the help for individuals, we wish to emphasize the collective need. Therefore send your contributions to the Synod Treasurer and in our letter of donation we shall request the church officials to send us a complete and detailed report as to how they used our money. Let us understand: this is the only way to help rebuild church buildings! May I also inform you that in Rumania everyone may receive DUTYFREE Packages until Dec. 31, 1970, but in Hungary one should certify that he was affected by the flood. Let us do, then, what we can. The deadline of our flood relief program is Dec. 15, 1970. If you need special envelopes, write to the Synod President! DR BUTOSI Dr. Butosi plans to report on his African experiences and on other important meetings in our Reformátusok Lapja soon ... (Is it one more reason to order the paper on congregational subscription basis? . . . ) AN EINSTEIN TESTIMONY Being a lover of freedom, when the revolution came in Germany, I looked to the universities to defend it, knowing that they had always boasted of their devotion to the cause of truth; but, no, the universities immediately were silenced. Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers whose flaming editorials in days gone by had proclaimed their love of freedom, but they like the universities, were silenced in a few short weeks. Then I looked to the individual writers, who, as literary guides of Germany, had written much and often concerning the flace of freedom in modern life; but they, too, across the path of Hitler’s campaign were mute. Only the Church stood squarely for suppressing truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. I am forced to confess that what I once despised I now Praise unreservedly. ALBERT EINSTEIN, 1879-1955 What we know not, teach us; What we have not, give us; What we are not, make us; What we have been, forgive us; And toward what we should be and shall be Guide, guard and direct us for Jesus’ sake.
