REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 15 Rev. Dr. John Bütösi SYNOD ANNIVERSARY The year of 1969 marks the 30th anniversary of our synod: as a result of the decision of the General Synod of the Evangelical and Reformed Church held at Fort Wayne, Ind. in 1936, our synod was organized on March 15, 1939. We remember this date with gratitude and encouragement: our life is shaped not according to fear and fate, but according to faith and confidence! May God grant us renewed trust in Him, confidence in the wisdom of our leaders, and a united determination to fulfill our high calling together! FAMILY PROTECTION PLAN LAUNCHED The Pension Boards of the United Church of Christ are now seeking active enrollment of eligible ministers in the new Family Protection Plan. Every minister received a leaflet describing the Plan, an enrollment card and salary report form which should be returned as soon as the congregation acts favorably. In order to take advantage of this greatly needed protection, 75% of the eligible ministers of our synod must be enrolled within 90 days. May I urge, therefore, our consistories to act as soon as possible in this matter. The Synod President will visit the Chicago and Cleveland areas early in February, and the Pittsburgh area on March 23 in order to give information, but he is also ready and willing to help any local congregation if help is requested. This is urgent and important! NEW UCC PRESIDENT NOMINATED The Rev. Dr. Robert V. Moss, President of Lancaster (Pa.) Theological Seminary, was nominated unanimously by the denomination’s nominating committee to stand for election as President of the United Church of Christ at the meeting of the General Synod to be held in Boston, June 25 - July 2, 1969. He is to succeed the Rev. Dr. Ben Herbster who will retire October 1, 1969. SINCERE SYMPATHY to the Rev. Dr. Géza Takaró who lost his wife on January 16, 1969. Dr. Butosi expressed, on behalf of The Calvin Synod, the prayerful sympathy of that fellowship. THE 1969 BETHLEN ALMANAC is now available. It is a monumental volume of 416 pages, compulsory for all who care to know the spectrum of Hungarian Reformed people outside of Hungary. We congratulate the editor, the Rev. Alexander Daroczy, and urge our leaders to study it! HUNGARIAN REFUGEES NEED HELP New Hungarian refugees now waiting in Italy and Germany are in need of American sponsors. Most of them are young persons of 20-30 years of age who are tradesmen or have occupational experience. The Committee of Resettlement Services, United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. is doing its best, but needs our help in placing them. Interested churches or persons should write to Mrs. Margaret Shackford, 475 Riverside Drive, New York, N.Y. 10027 (Telephone: 212-RI9-1400). REV. FRANK ENDREI IN CLEVELAND Rev. Frank A. Endrei was elected to succeed the Rev. Stephen W. Csutoros in the First Magyar Presbyterian Church of Cleveland, Ohio. He resigned as pastor of our church in Gary, Ind. as he assumed his duties in Cleveland on February 1, 1969. Rev. Endrei was a faithful and effective leader of our Synod: president of our Western Classis, Youth Advisor of our Synod, chairman of the Committee on Youth. We shall miss him very much! But he is still with us in our larger fellowship of Hungarian Reformed Ecumene. THANKS The Rev. Béla Bacsó forwarded §100.00 on behalf of his church, the Magyar United Church of Christ, Elyria, Ohio. “This is a token of our dual membership” Rev. Bacsó writes, “as we certainly would like to take it seriously and intend to attend the Synod Meeting in April.” We believe this is the right direction!... WHY BISHOP? The recent recommendation of the Conference Council to amend our constitution (Article XI) and call the President “Bishop” was received by favorable comments, but a few persons urged us to share the reasons for the amendment. Here they are briefly! The amendment is proposed NOT for the sake of craving for empty TITLES, but because (1) this might be a contribution in the Consultation on Church Union which accepts the office of bishops; (2) the Synod President actually exercises the functions of the bishop as described in the Principles of Church Union (pp. 55-56); (3) in the Hungarian Reformed Church the office of bishop has always been accepted and exercised from the 16th century up till now as a more Biblical concept than the “president”; (4) in ecumenical relations we are at a disadvantage with our “president” concept; (5) the bishop concept may pave the way for better administrative arrangements and more effective ecumenical services. Perhaps, these are enough for now!... ★ The Rev. Julius Paál, pastor of the Hungarian Reformed Church of Dayton, Ohio has accepted the call of the Los Angeles Hungarian Reformed Church. He will start his pastoral ministry in Los Angeles as of May 1, 1969. ★ The Eastern Classis Palm Sunday Conference will be held in the John Calvin Magyar Reformed Church, Perth Amboy. The theme of the bi-lingual conference will be: “Why to be loyal to God and to my church.” The Hungarian topic will be presented by Dr. John Butosi, and the English topic by the Rev. Leslie Egry. VACANT CHURCHES In addition to Flint, Mich., Miami, Fla., now Gary, Indiana is also vacant. Interested pastors should notify the Synod President or the Rev. Arpad Beretz, administrator. (Phoenixville, Pa. is also vacant!) Rev. Francis Vitéz, Editor 493 Amboy Avenue Perth Amboy, N.
