James Hakes. Bottom—Rev. Alexander Jalso presents dedication speech. On June 29 almost one thousand Hungarians attended the dedication of Kossuth Park on Grand Island, near Buffalo, N. Y. Dr. Joseph Bathori, a Piarist Father, was the guest speaker of the opening worship service. The Hungarian Lutherans were represented by the Rev. Denes Buthy, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church. The Rev. Alexander Jalso, pastor of the East Side Hungarian United Church of Christ, gave the dedication speech and the Rev. Nicholas Wesselényi, pastor of the Lackawanna Magyar Presbyterian Church, offered the prayer of dedication. Paul Kantor, Chief Administrator of Kossuth Park and pastor of the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church of Buffalo enthusiastically led the planning and promotion of all aspects of the park’s development. Although the building program of the Cultural Center was initiated by the pastor and members of the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church, Hungarians of all faiths are participating in its expansion. In less than a year the first phase of a long range building program was completed at a cost of $60,000.00. During the next few years fund raising activities will be held frequently to expedite the growth of the Cultural Center. Within five years the second phase of development should begin. This includes the building of classrooms and a stage adjacent to the present structure. The final goal of Kossuth Park is to meet the cultural, social and religious needs of people of Hungarian background. At the dedication of Kossuth Park, Buffalo’s Mayor Frank A. Sedita, and the Erie County Executive, B. John Tu- tuska, were also present. The popular County Executive’s speech, to everybody’s delight, was given in Hungarian. Boys of the Toldi Miklós Cserkeszcsapat (Scout Troop) and girls of the Hungarian Youth Club also participated in the program performing folk dances. The West Side Hungarian Church Is the home of both organizations. Immeasurable educational, social and cultural opportunities were opened with the dedication of the 25 acre Kossuth Park, but only with the passing years will people fully comprehend the value of this Hungarian Cultural Center.
