REFORMÁTUSOK LAPJA 15 Rev. Dr. John Bütösi President In Uppsala the president and secretary of our Synod had an opportunity to discuss pertinent problems with other Hungarian Reformed leaders. Thus it became clear that in the Hungarian Bible translation we are expected to participate in the so-called “super-revision”, i.e. we have ONE copy of the Old Testament translation which can be borrowed from the Synod President’s Office by any pastor of the Synod in order to examine it and suggest further improvements. (A copy of the New Testament revision will also be available.) Members of our Synod are urged to participate in this project. In Ligonier, Pa. the usual meetings took place in the first week of September. The Presbyter’s Association elected Mr. Alex Csik for president. UCC and Presbyterian ministers had a joint meeting. Rev. A. Elek became our representative in the Bethlen Home, and the Rev. Zoltán Kovács in the Freedom Press. Rt. Rev. Arpad George on account of his changed position, resigned as vice-president of our Synod. The Conference Council, upon the recommendation of the Nominating Committee (By-Laws V/b), made him stay as vice-president of our Synod. Dr. Stephen Szabó had another distinction: the Reformed College of Debrecen conferred upon him the title of “honorary professor” on Aug. 4 in Budapest. Congratulations! Funerals: the Rev. Sigmond Ladanyi died in New York City on July 8, and the Rev. Eugene Wm. Galantay died in Detroit on July 17, 1968. The Synod was represented on both funerals. May God comfort the bereaved ones! Ordinations: the Rev. James Kovács Jr. in the North Haven Congregational Church on Oct. 15, and the Rev. László Meggyesi in our Joliet Hungarian Ev. & Rev. Church also on Oct. 15, 1968. “God of the prophets, bless the prophets’ son! ..” Ministers Moved: Rev. A. Babos moved to Bethlehem, Pa. on Aug. 1, 1968 (937 Broadway, Bethlehem, Pa. 18015) Rev. Dr. George Csia moved to Pittsburgh, Pa. on Aug. 23 (221 Johston Ave.) Rev. Julius Paal started his ministry at Dayton, Ohio on Sept. 1, 1968. His address is: 3822-B. Cornell Drive, W. Dayton, Ohio 45457. Chicago, South Side elected the Rev. Victor Orth on September 15. (Salary: $7,200.00 basic, 11% pension, full social security, all medicare expenses in Illinois Conference, parsonage with all utilities.) Membership: 257 reported. Vacant Pulpits: (1) Flint, Michigan. Contact administrator Rev. A. Beretz! (2) Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Call the Synod President if interested. (3) Los Angeles, Calif., First Hung. Ev. & Ref. Church. Rev. A. Szabó retired as of Sept. 1, 1968. Contact the local church as they do not belong to our Synod. (4) Homestead, Pa. is still vacant. (5) Kalamazoo, Mich, is still vacant. The “New” Reformátusok Lapja is in your hands. The official transfer of editorship took place in Ligonier on Sept. 4, 1968. It is printed in the Bethlen Freedom Press. Our Special Projects We wish to call your attention to the DEBRECEN COLLEGE FUND which is needed for the renovation of this important educational institution of the Hung. Ref. Church in Hungary. Set aside a Sunday for special offering! Good News: through the efforts of the Alliance of the Reformed Churches 20,000 Hungarian Bibles were sent to Transylvania where these Bibles were greatly needed. Contributions for this project may be sent to the treasurer of the Ministerial Association. Fall Retreat will be held for the ministers of the Calvin Synod of the Hungarian Presbyterian Conference on October 28 and 29, 1968 in the Holiday Inn, Ligonier, Pa. The retreat gives an opportunity to discuss pertinent problems (new persion plan, group Life and Death Insurance program, Hungarian “oikumene”, liturgy, etc.) as well as to deepen our relationship to God and one another (meditation, Bible study, “sensitivity training”, etc.) Our ministers certainly need such an opportunity in these days. The retreat will start at 10 a.m. on Oct. 28 and conclude at noon on Oct. 29. Registration should be sent to the Rev. Dr. J. Butosi no later than Oct. 15. Although the Holiday Inn will give us a special group rate ($8.00 for room, $6.00 for a day meals), nevertheless the expenses might be burdensome for most of our ministers. The Conference Council decided to pay two cents per mile travel expenses for members of the Synod, and also willing to pay for one evening meal. At the same time WE URGE OUR CONSISTORIES TO PAY THE BALANCE OF THE EXPENSES FOR THEIR PASTORS. Read this letter at your next consistory meeting and make it clear that this retreat is not a luxury but a must for your pastor. Its blessings will be greatest for the congregations! Let us all be aware of the fact that the bi-lingual ministry of our churches is fast approaching a critical stage: less and less able ministers do we find to fill our pulpits. Those who are with us in this ministry should be honored, encouraged and sustained! Dr. John Butosi, Pres. Rev. Francis Vitéz, Editor 493 Amboy Avenue Perth Amboy, N.
