CAN AND SHOULD WE LOVE ALL MEN, EVEN OUR ENEMIES ? Lesson: Matt. 5:43—48. Unquestionably the final, deciding and severest test of our Christianity is our willingness to love all men, irrespective of our personal relationship with them. Very few of us are able to pass this trying test. Most of us simply talk of how excellent, exalting and noble it must be to be able to love even our enemies. Our actions, feelings and thoughts are fraught with the spirit of retaliation. If people hate us, we in turn despise them. If persons gossip about us, we too tell lies about them. But what puzzles me is, how readily and energetically we defend ourselves when our consciences or others try to reprove us for it. To many forgiving, loving and praying for their enemies is an act of cowardice, a dishonorable and dastardly thing. According to them, if someone does you dirt, to use their slang, you should be eager to repay that dirt doubly. Two eyes for an eye and two slaps for a slap — is their motto. Even among gangsters, robbers, hoodlums and whatnots you can find a peculiar kind of love and a fear-generated loyalty to each other. But this “love” and “loyalty” are confined to their immediate circle only. Even they will “love” each other, in a certain sense of the word. And if we love only our friends and those in our class, what do we more than these enemies of society? I wonder how; many of us are able to pray ardently and heartily for those who murder our souls, blacken our reputation and throw mud upon our honor? Here lies the true test of our Christianity! Frank Nagy. «3B0B0B&» A BIGGER, BETTER, STRONGER UNION!! WHY AND HOW ? By Irene Incze. A good motto or verse to keep before every Christian Endeavorer is “Here am I, send me.” If each person in the society would offer help or co-operation evervtime it is needed — the society would have to hold its meetings in a ten acre field, so large would it be. For it is a known truth that when young men and women take hold of a project with all the force, energy and intelligence of modern youth, that project moves with amazing alacrity. Why do we want a bigger, better, stronger Union? The answer to that is — to keep young people for Christ and the church. Another reason is — to maintain our American-Magyarism, for who is left to carry on after our parents are gone? — no one but us. It has been said that “we may change our name, our residence, our manners, and our clothes, but we cannot change our nationality.” How are we to build our Union? We must first build our Christian Endeavor and Young People’s Society and in that way organize a bigger Union. Is not our Society growing? Was not this proved at the Conference held at Lackawanna last summer? Now to have a real live Union. Where is Tom, who draws pictures so well? Of course he will draw a poster to place in the church vestibule to advertise the Sunday evening meetings. Several original young pepole may serve on a committee with him to offer him good material for his poster. The poster idea should be an interest making force for the whole church. When the time rolls around for the meeting, each live member should bring a visitor with him, and introduce the person to the other young people. Set aside a few minutes for conversation so everyone may feel that he, the visitor is not ill at ease. The burden of the meeting falls upon the leader-he must find appropriate songs-find a song, leader who will lead lusty singing. The leader must have attractive questions handed out to be discussed. The leader must start an informal dis- cussion-where interest is intense and excitement Nagy Ferenc
